GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Santa Rosa Junior College is seeking Mathematics Instructors with demonstrated instructional skills to join an outstanding team of faculty, staff and instructional administrators in providing high quality services to our district, our community, and most importantly, our students. There are four full-time, regular contract positions in the Mathematics Department at Santa Rosa Junior College, beginning Fall Semester, August 2014. Three (3) positions will be located at the Petaluma Campus and one (1) position will be located at the Santa Rosa Campus. The Petaluma Campus is located in Petaluma, approximately 17 miles south of the Santa Rosa Campus. Appointments are contingent upon funding and Board approval.

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION

The Mathematics Department of Santa Rosa Junior College is a dynamic, diverse, and collegial group of individuals who have great enthusiasm for the teaching and learning of mathematics. The instructors believe in maintaining high standards and strive for student success. All of the 25 full-time and many adjunct instructors are involved in community activities that support mathematics education and are also active members of various mathematics organizations. The department incorporates the use of graphing calculators and other technology for courses at and above the level of Intermediate Algebra. Resources include administrative office assistance, a mathematics computer laboratory, and a college tutorial center.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The emphasis of these positions is the teaching of mathematics courses ranging from elementary algebra through linear algebra, differential equations and statistics to a diverse student population.  Teaching responsibilities include approximately 15 hours per week of instruction, plus office hours for student counseling and contact. In addition to teaching responsibilities, these positions require involvement in departmental and campus-wide committees.

SRJC offers courses at the Santa Rosa and Petaluma Campuses, at the Southwest Center, and in online formats as well. While these assignments are primarily for the Santa Rosa Campus, please note that the District reserves the right of assignment to any location, and that assignments could involve any combination of day or evening classes with mandatory weekly Student Consultation Time. Instructors assume responsibility for maintaining currency in the field and for updating existing courses and developing new curricula; participating in the assessment of student learning outcomes; managing labs and Tutorial Centers; and participating in community outreach on behalf of the College.

CAMPUS DESCRIPTION

The SRJC Petaluma Campus currently enrolls nearly 6,000 students in credit and non-credit courses. Each semester, approximately 350 course sections in nearly 60 disciplines are offered, including many majors and certificates as well as all of the courses necessary for transfer to UC, CSU, or to complete SRJCs general education requirements. SRJC has been offering courses in the Petaluma area for nearly 50 years. The original Petaluma Center operated primarily as an evening program until the completion in 1995 of permanent facilities on its current site, and was granted campus status by the SRJC Board of Trustees and the California Community College Chancellors Office in the spring of 1999. A second phase of new construction was completed in 2008; a third phase renovated the original campus. This project, the largest of its kind in SRJCs history, tripled the square footage of the campus. Among the new facilities are labs and classrooms, a second art studio, a 35,000 square foot library, a physical fitness center, a bookstore, student services and support areas, expanded dining space, faculty/administrative offices, and a 256-seat auditorium. The campus offers state-of-the-art technology throughout, including a wireless network, fully mediated instructional facilities, and video-conferencing capabilities. Other unique features of the campus include the Capri Creek restoration project and an accessible walking and bike trail system. A Cinema Series, Digital Media, Networking, Helpdesk, Fitness, Nutrition and Health, CISCO, and Water Resources Technology certificates are some of the program offerings unique to the campus. This beautiful campus is located 35 miles north of San Francisco.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

Masters Degree in Mathematics or Applied Mathematics; OR Bachelors in either of the above and Masters Degree in Statistics, Physics, or Mathematics Education; OR the equivalent; OR possession of a fully satisfied (Life) California Community College Instructors Credential in Mathematics. Requires a sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

If you do not possess the minimum qualifications exactly as stated above, you must file for equivalency. If claiming equivalency, applicants are responsible for documenting all course work, degree programs and related professional experience at time of application.

Preferred:

  • The proven ability to teach the full range of Community College mathematics curriculum.
  • Demonstrated success in, and enthusiasm for, the teaching of mathematics.
  • Professional involvement, and a proven commitment to professional growth.
  • Masters Degree in Mathematics.
  • Experience with the use of technology in the classroom.

    • If applicable, completed Equivalency Form and supporting documents.
  2. A cover letter explaining your interest in the positions, including how you meet the requirements and are qualified to perform the duties as listed in the Position Description section of this announcement.
  3. A statement describing your demonstrated experience in understanding and being sensitive to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds and disabled community college students, faculty and staff.
  4. Current Resume.
  5. Copies of transcripts of all college level course work. Unofficial copies (both sides) are acceptable, but official transcripts must be submitted prior to hiring. If transcripts are from an institution outside of the United States, applicants must provide a formal evaluation of their foreign degree(s) at the time of application.   6. A copy of a course information sheet that you would give to students that outlines procedures, policies and grading.
  7. A copy of a one-hour pre-calculus exam covering exponential and logarithmic functions.
  8. If applicable, copy of fully satisfied (Life) California Community College Instructors Credential in Mathematics (both sides).

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

  • Starting Salary Range: $57,389 - $80,918 per year (2013/14 Faculty Salary Schedule). Teaching experience, other related professional experience, and academic degrees determine salary placement on a schedule that is competitive with other California Community Colleges.

  • Benefits: The District offers a competitive health and benefit package for employees and eligible dependents.

  • Leave/Holiday time: Full-time faculty members earn one day of sick leave for each month worked.
