Welcome

The first half of CIS 70.11A explores the basics of Photoshop, including selection, layers, painting, image sources and copyright, and resolution. The second half covers simple automations,the correction of image color and tone, image repair, a few fun filters, and the creation of complex composite images.

This is the entry course to four semesters of Photoshop instruction. Some of you may learn all you need from just this course. Others may become so fascinated with Photoshop that you will continue on to take all four courses. The first two courses, CS 70.11A and CS 70.11B, explore all the topics covered on the Adobe Certified Associate in Adobe Photoshop exam.

You should plan to spend about 9 hours on each class, including listening to videos and doing assignments.

This summer class moves very fast. Classes are twice a week, as are assignments. If you get behind at all, you will not be able to catch up easily. Make sure you have the time to complete this class in summer.

About Your Instructor

My name is Windsor Green. I have taught at the JC for about 13 years. Before that I worked as a photographer for newspapers, and before that I owned a photography studio in San Francisco, shooting magazine ads and catalogues. After spending many hours a day in the darkroom, I found that I love the possibilities of Photoshop, and don't miss the chemicals at all. Photoshop allows you to reproduce images much more easily, with much more control doing it.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate competency in identifying Photoshop interface elements.
  2. Construct simple documents utilizing selections, layers, and  blending modes.
  3. Differentiate between simple graphic file formats and choose the appropriate usage for each.

Hardware / Software

We are working with Adobe Photoshop CS CC. You will not be able to use Adobe Photoshop Elements to complete the course. 

You probably have heard that Adobe is going to a subscription service, called Creative Cloud.

We will be teaching the CS CC version, however, it you have CS6 on your computer you will be able to finish the class, with maybe a trip to the lab at some point.

You may also decide to purchase the subscription. It costs $29.99/month. Check the Adobe website, as they may have a special for Photoshop CC and Lightroom for $9.99/month. The deals are always changing. The subscription is good for a year, and then new pricing may happen, I do not know.

The package with the subscription includes Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and all the web and video applications Adobe offers. There will be no more versioning, no CS7, but all updates will be done through the subscription service, and updated throughout the year.

If you stop paying, the applications will go away.

You can purchase the subscription to the Creative Cloud from the Adobe site.

You may use the CS lab in either Petaluma or Santa Rosa during regularly scheduled lab hours, or work at your own computer.

Check hardware and software requirements before buying software. (Photoshop does not run well or at all on older computers.)

Once you install your software, be sure to go to the Adobe web site and download and install the newest updaters for Photoshop and for Bridge, the file management application that accompanies Photoshop. If you don't install the new versions, you may experience frequent crashes and slowdowns.

You may purchase the PDF and have it printed yourself, or print it on your own printer, or just use the PDF.

The class is taught with the Adobe Creative Cloud version, but if you are still using CS6, you may purchase that version of the PDF from the same website. No printed versions are available, just the PDF.

All future classes in Photoshop will be taught with the Creative Cloud version.

Recommended but not Required Text

Real World Photoshop CS6.
This is a good Photoshop reference book. Most people do not read this book cover to cover. Instead, if you don't understand how a command, tool, or panel works, or want to learn more about its options, you look up the item from the book's extensive index at the back of the book and then read just the relevant section(s). It cover a great deal of material that is beyond the scope of this introductory course.

Another book is Photoshop CS6: The Missing Manual by Lesa Snider. 2010. This book is a good reference.

The Photoshop Help menu is also a very valuable and extensive. Many answers you will need can be found here. This may be all you need for a reference.

Videos

Mike Starkey has recorded videos that demonstrate key Photoshop and Bridge techniques. These videos are intended to AUGMENT not to REPLACE the textbook, and they do not show every step in the written Guided Exercises. Often the videos show techniques that are not in the written book.

Videos are found on the Practical Photoshop website.

The videos range in length from an hour to two hours. You may want to right or control + click the video link and save the movie files to your hard drive or flash drive, and then play them locally as time permits.

Windows folks: you will need a recent version of the free Quicktime Player to view these and other class movies.

Mac folks: Quicktime is part of the Mac OS.

For everyone, you can see the videos in a larger window if you first open Quicktime, and then open the movie within the Quicktime Player. If you just click on a movie link within your Web browser, you will have fewer controls, and the videos will be smaller.

My Website and CATE

My website contains most of the information that you will need to complete projects and the due dates.

You will need an email account to upload files, and take tests online. Whether working from home or in one of the SRJC labs, you will need basic skills for navigating web sites and the ability to send and receive email. You must have an email account that you can check on a regular basis.

CATE (Center for Advanced Technology Education) is where you will find Quizzes, Drop boxes, the Gradebook, and the Gallery of student work.

You will need to check-in to our class (only once) on the CATE system to use its online components:

Then, you will need to enter your user name and password each time you take a quiz, upload a file to a class drop box, or view a class gallery. Your user name and password are case-sensitive, which means that capitalization matters.

We also have a Message Board on CATE, where you can post questions to other students, who may have the same questions. There are a few assignments that require a posting, usually a critique of a previous assignment. It is linked from the nav bar on the left of this page.

Using the Class Web site

Nearly every page of our course materials has this navigational bar:

Syllabus takes you to the page that you are currently reading. It describes the course requirements, and provides recommendations for class success.

Schedule gives an overview of all the class assignments with their points and due dates. Bookmark it and check it at least once a week to see what you should do.

Assignments  spells out what you should do each week in great detail. Here you will find the reading assignments, projects, links to upload your completed Photoshop assignments, and more. Each of the links on the Assignments page is password protected, so that only members of our class can see them. You must type in your class user name and password to take a quiz, or submit an assignment to a class drop box.

NOTE: When working in any of the SRJC labs, you will not be allowed to print out any online materials. Print from home if you have a printer or use the college's pay to print facilities.

Assignments

Assignments will be uploaded to CATE.

Drop boxes are special locations where you submit your graphics files. I have created one of these special locations for each assignment where you are to send me a file. Each drop box link is with its assignment on the Assignment page.

Important: Submitted homework files shall not be larger than 600 pixels for the longer dimension and less than 100 kb, unless I tell you otherwise. It is also problematic if you make your files too small because then I cannot see enough detail in your images to evaluate them properly. Please keep the larger pixel dimension at 600 pixels, not smaller.

Step by step instructions to prepare your files for web submission are at the end of Tutorial 2.

You will be docked points beginning the third week of class if you turn in files in the wrong file format, with incorrect pixel dimensions, larger than 110 kb, or less than 90 kb.

The assignment are due Tuesdays and Fridays. I will accept an assignment one class late, at half credit. It will not be accepted after that. Please Note: Nothing will be accepted past one class late.

Assignments are due at 11:59pm. The quizzes and documentation forms all close at 11:59 pm and are not accessible after this

The final exam and final projects are due at 11:59 pm and nothing late will be accepted after that time. They must be submitted by 11:59 pm t so make sure you allow enough time to submit on time.

Email

I will send out a class email at least twice a week. So, if you don't check your email, you may miss out on important class information.

You can email me at wgreen@santarosa.edu. I check my email often, and typically respond within a day or two. Please include our section number in the subject of each class email you send. If your question is urgent, please put urgent in the subject heading of your email.

Class Communication

Don't hide from the class. It is important to read your email often. I will be sending out an email once a week to clarify issues, point out errors, etc. I will communicate with you via the grade book page feedback if you have submitted things incorrectly.

You can choose to post to the Message Board when trying to find the answer to a problem, or you can email me directly. By using the Message Board, one of your classmates may be able to help you. I encourage everyone to use it to open up dialogues about Photoshop and the lessons.

Quizzes and Exams

There are 8 online quizzes, designed to test whether you understood the central issues of the class subject. In class 7 there will be a midterm exam and the last week of class there will be a final exam. If you need to miss an exam, make prior arrangements with me to reschedule, or you will receive a zero.

The quizzes are only open until 11:59 pmof the day they are due. Even a minute after Midnight you will not be allowed to take the test. Please do not wait until the last minute to do the assignments.

All exams in this class are untimed, open book, open notes, open Photoshop.
The more you read and study before each exam, the more you will learn.
The exams are generated from a large testbank of questions. Each time you open an exam, there will be different questions. You cannot print out the test, look up the answers, and then reopen the same test.

Once you open an exam, you MUST take it. Your instructor knows if you open and close an exam before taking it, and may penalize you if you do so.

After completing the quiz or exam, you will get a message telling you your score.
The midterm and final exams will only be open for a limited period of days. If you need to miss an exam, make prior arrangements with your instructor to reschedule, or you will receive a zero.

Grading

Class assignments are due on Tuesdays and Fridays. Typically, I will ONLY grade twice a week. As I grade, I will also record comments in your online grade book. If I have a problem with one of your assignments, I may ask you to re-submit it. If I ask you to resubmit, it must be resubmitted by the following class.

You can keep track of your grades by clicking on the "Grades" button in the main navigation. Check your grades often! it is yopur responsibility to let me know if I missed anything in the gradebook. After 2 classese, nothing in the gradebook will be changed.

To pass the class, you must receive at least 71%. You must also complete the midterm exam, final exam, and final project, even if you are taking the class Pass/No Pass.

B 80 - 91%
CR or C 70 - 81%
NP or D 60 - 71%
NP or F Below 70%

 


Pass-No Pass

You may take this class Pass/No Pass. You must decide before the deadline, and add the option online by going to your login and selecting your classes, and checking the P/NP checkbox. With a grade of C or better, you will get a Pass. You must file for the P/NP immediately. Once you decide to go for P/NP, you cannot change back to a grade.

Getting Help

Photoshop is a very complex program, and you will probably have some questions and problems. Try this strategy:

Search for the answer in Photoshop Help. Check in your Photoshop CS5 reference book that you chose.

Post a message to the class Message Board to see if anyone else is having the same problem, or knows the answer. Typically, several students have the same question and if I answer it publicly, then everyone can benefit.

Email me. Put your section number and HELP in the subject line so that I know you have an important question that is keeping you from completing your assignment. Since I have many students who will be emailing me this semester, the correct subject line tells me to answer you quickly.

Thursdays from 10:00am -11:00am, I will be live at the computer and available for conferencing. Please make arrangements with me before any Thursday, to schedule conferencing.

Attendance

Students are expected to attend all sessions of the course in which they are enrolled. A student may be dropped from any class when that student's absences exceed ten percent.
Students who fail to attend the first two class meetings of a full semester course, or the first class
meeting for classes that meet once a week may be dropped by the instructor. For classes that
meet online, students must log on and initiate participation by 11:59 p.m. of the third day from the
official start date of the class. (10%) of the total hours of class time.

STUDENT CONDUCT GUIDELINES

Students who register in SRJC classes are required to abide by the SRJC Student Conduct
Standards. Violation of the Standards is basis for referral to the Vice President of Student
Services or dismissal from class or from the College.

Department policy prohibits cell phones and beepers from being used in the classrooms or the

Collaborating on or copying of tests or homework in whole or in part will be considered an act
of academic dishonesty and result in a grade of 0 for that test or assignment. I encourage
students to share information and ideas, but not their work.

ACCOMODATIONS FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES

If you need disability related accommodations for this class, such as a note taker, test taking
services, special furniture, use of service animal, etc., please provide the Authorization for
Academic Accommodations (AAA) letter from the Disability Resources Department (DRD) to me
as soon as possible. You may also speak with me privately during office hours about your
accommodations. If you have not received authorization from DRD, it is recommended that
