Course Description: This course is designed to examine the use of information systems to support the management and business activities of an organization. The topics include: the fundamentals of hardware and software, database management, data communications, transaction processing information systems, decision support systems, information reporting systems, office automation, networks, tapping the internet, expert systems, problem analysis, and system analysis and design. Case studies, current news items, and several software packages will be utilized to illustrate the principles covered. You will need the use of a computer system. The topics covered are listed in the separate tentative Assignment Schedule's for Sec#4507 (traditional lecture/lab format) and Sec#5414 (online format). (3.0 units - Grade only) Transfer: CSU. (CAN BUS 6)

Materials: Necessary storage media (floppy/zip/flash drive) to save your case study assignments, application software exercises, group work and final presentation materials.

Prerequisites: There is no prerequisite for this class, however, recommended courses include Math 150A, BMG 54, or equivalent.

Attendance: Students will be held responsible for all material covered in lectures/online chapter notes, in addition to assignments and group activities.  Information vital to the completion of assignments or exams may be given at any time during the lecture period. Daily attendance will be taken. Online students are required to browse the course website at least three times a week to check for announcements and or course content ! Adherence to the schedule is of utmost IMPORTANCE....(ie suggested dates for covering chapter content, due dates for group work and assignments) and If you find you will not be able to attend a scheduled test, you must make arrangements BEFORE the test with me for a special test, otherwise a score of zero will be recorded for your grade.

Reading\Assignments\Group Activities: The textbook chapter reading assignments (including online chapter notes) should be done prior to the class that covers that topic. By doing the reading ahead of time, you will have a better understanding of the lectures/online chapter notes and will be able to raise questions concerning the text while we are covering that material in class or online.

Assignments will require employing software tools in such areas as word processing, database management, spreadsheets, expert systems, programming, electronic mail, use of the Internet, and operating systems. There are two assignment schedules available on the course website one for Sec#4507 (taught in the traditional lecture/lab format on  MW 12:00pm-1:30pm Rm#2913) and the other for Sec#5414 (taught online). Please refer to the your specific assignment schedule for timelines/information on assignments. Use of a word processor is required for all assignments (*online students should paste prior word processed assignment content on to their emails sent to me) and collegiate level work is expected. Assignments turned in after the end of the class period on the due date will be penalized 5 points per week. If a partial assignment is turned in, it will be assumed that it will not be completed and will be graded on the work completed. Don’t fall behind!!!

In class/online group activities to be assigned will include specific case study analysis projects, current news items and a final group presentation.

If you are considering dropping, please see me before you do; arrangements can often be made so that dropping isn’t necessary.
