INTRODUCTION

hen drawing freehand portraits, capturing an individual's gesture is very important. Details in the eyes, nose, mouth, and ears describe the subject's individuality. These details, however, must be built upon a strong foundation; the proportions and position of the face on the canvas should first be determined using some simple techniques. Here is a link to WetCanvas.com's Portraiture tutorial. Please work through this tutorial as you capture the face of one of your neighbor students. Another great reference site is www.fineart.sk. Here, you will find many books online and suggested books for sale.

THE PROJECT

reate a canvas area of 600 pixels wide by 800 pixels high. After the sketch is reworked, corrected, and completed using Painter's #2B Pencil (Size 1.4; catagory Buildup; subcatagory SoftBuildup; opacity 6%), you can use color tools to further develop your portrait. In the end you should have saved both an uncolored AND a colored version. These two images will be due at the end of the day. Good luck, have fun, and don't forget to smile!
