Course Overview
A hands-on introduction to using CSS and Photoshop to create Web sites. Subjects covered include: either - creating original CSS or modifying existing CSS templates, establishing a site color scheme, downloading images, editing images, image collage, and logo design. Modifying text and navigation. Finally students will develop comp modifications based on a core design.

Required Text
The book and CD from CS 50.21A will be used.

The book is Professional Web Design: Techniques and Templates 3rd edition by Clint Eccher which is available in the student bookstore or online at amazon.com.

The CD is Linda Hemenway's CS 50.21 A/B Webpage Design with CSS available in the Santa Rosa and Petaluma campus bookstores. You need to ask for the CD, it won't be displayed on the shelf. The CD is also available online.

Required Hardware and Software

Hardware/Software Requirements
To take this class, you need access to the following:

  • Internet Account: You may already have your own Internet provider where you can store pages and if you are familiar with the FTP process you may use that provider during the class.

    In addition you are entitled to a free account at the SRJC server "student". You will need to request an account on this server. Instructions for obtaining and using the account can be accessed at the CIS Web site. I encourage you to visit this site, read the instructions and request an account today since it may take up to week to activate your account.
  • Email account: please use the same one throughout the course
  • Fairly powerful computer with enough RAM to run Photoshop.
  • Modem, DSL or Cable Internet Access
  • Web Browser: Firefox or Internet Explorer (use a recent version that can support JavaScript and forms) Please do not use the AOL browser to access the class web site.
  • HTML Editor such as Notepad or TextEdit on the low end to dreamweaver on the high end. BBEDit, HotMetal, HomeSite, etc.
  • Photoshop CS2 or CS3

If you do not have all this at home, the CIS department provides several computer labs including:

  1. CIS Lab - Maggini Hall 3rd floor
  2. BCL Lab - Maggini Hall 2nd floor
  3. PET Lab - Petaluma Center

These labs have an assortment of Macs and PCs, which contain Firefox and IE as well as HTML editors and graphics software. We have flash drives, scanners, color printers, and laser writers as well.

Homework
You will be creating various assignments which allow you to complete a website which has an opening page, second level pages and a third level page. You will also surf the web for examples of excellence and evaluate each other's work.

Many of the assignments require you to submit an online form in order to complete the assignment. If you have problems with the online form, send the information to your instructor in an email along with a description of the problem.

Getting a Web Account
Some of you may already have an account with an ISP that provides web space. Web space on the SRJC server is offered at no charge to students. Accounts may take up to 1 week to be initiated.

Grading
The grading button will take you to a page where you can keep track of your grades. Late work will only be accepted 1 week after due date and a 20% deduction will be imposed.

If you are taking this course to complete one of the SRJC CIS Department Web Development Certificates, you must take the class for a letter grade.

These are the percentages for grades:

    100%-90% A
  89%-80% B
  79%-70% C
  69%-60% D
  less than 60% F

The lab printers are for printing class assignments only! Please DO NOT use the printers to print out class notes, syllabus or any web pages.
