This picture is of the great aunt of a friend of mine and had been lost for several years (the daughter of the lady in the picture had no pictures of her mother and few memories because she was orphaned at about 4 years old) and was just recently found in a box full of old photos at another aunt's house.
As you can see, the photo is badly damaged with tears, folds and ink spots and the overall picture has faded to a sepia tone. Most people think this tone was a style used in photographs at this time but the coloration is actually a part of the deteriorization of the print and it was actually shot in black and white.
After fixing the color shift I fixed the overall contrast and exposure then the time consuming part came - fixing all the damage.
It was very touching when my friend's mother and father were able to take the restored photo to this lady's daughter (she is 70 years old and had not seen a picture of her mother since early childhood) and give it to her when they attended a family reunion.
