What's New at Farrell College for Spring 2008

Has the rain really stopped and should we be looking towards turning on our irrigation systems? I hope not as I would like a little more winter rain before our endless summer. As we close in towards mid-semester the dept. seems to be rolling along, classes are filled with activity and we are looking towards our much anticipated facility improvements as well as the infamous plant sale. This year it is April 28th and as usual it will be filled with lots of exotic plants as well as familiar favorites. Good food, excellent music, interesting vendors and lots of free advice highlight this wonderful event.

By the time you read this our summer and fall schedules will be out and once again there are several new and exciting courses. It is imperative that you, our dedicated students, enroll early and often. We try our best to bring you the most inclusive well-rounded schedule that we can and it is only through your support that these classes can continue to be offered. If your not sure about a class it is very helpful to us to sign up, check it out and drop it later if need be. Without your enrollments there are no classes! We hope to be adding a half time grounds worker to help with the overwhelming task of keeping the weeds at bay while improving on the already established plantings. The world of technology is forever expanding and in order to keep abreast of these opportunities we have purchased computers and LCD projectors for all rooms and will be in the process of converting all our slides to CDs. We are also in the process of making the whole horticulture facility wireless. We appreciate all that you bring to our department.

These are just a sampling of the more than 40 classes being taught this summer/fall. Be sure to check out our one day Saturday fee based classes - our exceptional Floral Design classes, and our renowned Pruning Class program. Remember we also have a full evening program designed for the working student.

New Changes

On the facilities front - the new trailer has been moved into the back lath area and utilities/internet are being connected. Classroom H101 has a new paint job and has never looked so good. Molly continues to head up the lath house conversion while juggling several other critical tasks. The plant sale emptied several tables of plant material and it seems as though the propagation club is working hard to fill them back up. We continue to work on getting you a new gate so you won’t need to struggle with the gate as it is especially in the evenings when it is raining.

The Fall 2008 plant sale and fair is October 15th, so mark your calendars and tell your friends.
