The cute black dog
by Linda HemenwayThis is the story of Maverick our dog. When my youngest daughter, Jessica was 14 she begged and pleaded for a dog as her birthday present. She had killed most of the pets she had gotten in the past (2 rats, a parakeet, and a hamster), but we held out hope that she had matured enough to take care of a dog.
She had always loved dogs over all other pets. When we visited a house where someone had a dog, she would spend her time petting, the dog, following it around the house, and in general, being a pest. Her Dad's girlfriend had recently gotten a rigrback puppy, and Jessica loved spending time with it.
Off we went to the Humane society where we stumbled across a batch of puppies. there were 4 puppies, 2 males, and 2 females. They were black lab and border collie. There was 1 puppy left, the only puppy with white markings. Once my daughter picked him up it was all over. I didn't think she would ever let go of him, but she did allow the humane society workers to take him so he could be prepped for adoption. We brought him home that night.
She still loves having a dog, she feeds him and scoops the #&%^*, but she doesn't really have enogh time to be with him, so he has become my dog. I work from home and he sits with me all day. I take him to the dog park twice a week and feed him in the mornings. I am glad we got the dog, but if you get a dog for your teenager, prepare to adopt him when the tenn gets busy.
