Milestone Chart - Business of Web Design and Web Content Practicum

As we progress through the semester you may be wondering if your are "behind", "ahead" or "right on time". Here is a chart to help you see the major events or "milestones" which the project requires and a timeline of when these events should occur.

Green - indicates the milestone was met on time
Yellow - indicates the milestone was late (within 1 week of deadline)
Red - indicates the milestone was very late (within 2 weeks of deadline)

Class Milestones

Listed below are the milestones that must be met by all teams. Project Managers will use these events to create their team timeline and set deadlines.

1. Initial meeting with client -
If the team has not met with this milestone, the PM is REQUIRED to send the instructor an email. Instructor will contact the client to facilitate the meeting.

2. Analysis of client content - Team needs the content in digital form. Team also needs to understand the content and be able to match the content to the storyboard. If the team has not met with this milestone, the PM is REQUIRED to send the instructor an email. The instructor will call the client or speak to any CD who has not done their job. * Please note - content is defined as the words that will go on the Web page. The images which will be used by the designer are not counted as part of content when meeting the various class deadlines.

3. Mockup presented to instructor The PSD document for the first page and the second level pages will be shown to the instructor. If third and fourth level pages are required the designer will discuss how the second level page will be altered, however a PSD file is not required. If a splash page is requested then a mock up of this page will be submitted. If the designer does not have all PSD documents ready for the instructor a one week extension will be granted (20% of the points will be deducted). If the designer is more than 2 weeks late with the mockup they will be removed from the production workflow and the instructor will complete the mockups. If the delay is caused by the client or by circumstances beyond the control of the designer, there will be no deduction for lateness. Regardless of the reason, no mockup can be more than 2 weeks late.

4. Web Proposal - Web proposal needs to be printed out and ready to show instructor. I recommend the PM set an early deadline which gives them 3-5 days to review the proposal elements to make sure they are complete and to compile them into a packet and to load them on the Web. If the team has not met with this milestone, the PM is REQUIRED to send the instructor an email. The instructor will help the PM organize the proposal, or will call the team member who has not completed their task.

5. Client signs proposal - If the delay is caused by the client's schedule no action will be taken by the instructor and the deadline will be extended by one week. If the delay is caused by a disagreement between the team and client or because one of the team has not corrected a Web proposal element, the instructor will contact the team mate and client. If the team has not met with this milestone, the PM is REQUIRED to send the instructor an email.

6. Template completed by designer and handed off to CDs. If the team has not met with this milestone, the PM is REQUIRED to send the instructor an email. If there is a problem with the template the designer and instructor will meet during the 10th class meeting to discuss the problem and there will be a one week extension for the template (20% of the points will be deducted). If the designer is 2 weeks late with the template, they will be removed from the design role on the team and the instructor or another team member will assemble the template.

7. Website complete and ready to test- If the team has not met with this milestone, the PM is REQUIRED to send the instructor an email. If the problem is that CDs have not completed their pages, the instructor will meet with the CDs and extend the deadline by one week. CDs who are over one week late will be removed from the production cycle and teammates will complete their pages. If the problem is with the programming code the instructor and programmer will meet and a one week extension will be granted. If the programmer is not able to make the code work by the 16th week of class the client will be informed that the programming features will not be included in their deliverables. If the problem is that the images are not done, the designer and the instructor will meet and the designer will have an extended deadline of one week. Designers who have not completed all images by week 16 will be removed from the production process and the instructor or a teammate will complete images. In some cases the client will be informed that the deliverables will change to include fewer images.

8. Testing of site complete - If the team has not met with this milestone, the PM is REQUIRED to send the instructor an email. If the problem is that one of the teammates have not sent out the questions the student will have until week 16, if the questions are not complete the team member will be removed from the production cycle and the test will be assigned to another team mate. The student who was removed from the process will receive a zero for the testing assignment. If the problem is that classmates were supposed to evaluate your site, and they have not turned in their critique, then compile the testing report without their data and send the instructor an email with the missing students names, points will be deducted from their grade.

9. Handoff of site Client and teacher will be given a CD which contains the web site pages and images, the original PSD files, the project Web site, and the client manual. If the team has not met with this milestone, the PM is REQUIRED to send the instructor an email. Any team who has not provided the instructor and client the CD will have their final grade held. The instructor will wait one week after final, if the CD has still not been turned over the team will receive failing grades. If the PM is unable to produce the CD because a teammate has not supplied one of the required elements (PSD files, manual, etc.). Then the PM needs to make an incomplete CD and let the instructor know what is missing. The PM and all teammates will receive their grades, only the member of the team who has not supplied the required element will have their grade held for a week or be given a failing grade.

* Please note - content is defined as the words that will go on the Web page. The images which will be used by the designer are not counted as part of content when meeting the various class deadlines.
