Site-Moments Project

November 15, 1995

I am collecting visual and non-visual site specific evidence using resources from science to geomancy for a personal, non-commercial art project. Primarily I will use the electromagnetic spectrum (and other scientific and pre-scientific systems I may discover) to: 1) determine the location of a chosen site (longitude and latitude, grid squares, etc.) and 2) discover evidence about that site (i.e., maps, weather satellite photos, GPS information, etc.).

After the collecting and filtering process I will use this information to produce work in any relevant media to intelligently express my connection with a site. I think of myself as a digital landscape painter.

I am seeking input from others who may be able to add to my information base. So far I my research has been limited to my own art and technology background, Web searches. Areas I would like to develop more include but are not limited to: Earth data from satellites, geologic and topographical data, geo-spiritual power spots (like Stonehenge), Earth resonance and audible resources (Earthquake data, sound artists who record sounds of various rivers, etc....).

Who am I?

My background is in art and I have been teaching art for 20 years. I was first a chemistry major and have recently started to incorporate some of the scientific and technical processes into my creative work. My earliest connection with the electromagnetic spectrum came through radio (a ham radio operator at age 11 and now with call K6PZB). I am presently involved with a high speed digital network in Sonoma County, California, with a 230kbps 904MHz backbone and a gateway to my place of work, Santa Rosa Junior College. We are researching multimedia and real time radio frequency applications with this network.
