Welcome!

This eight-week course is designed for the student who wants to incorporate advanced features of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) when designing web pages. Some of the topics that will be covered include: HTML editors, CSS box properties, div and span tags, CSS layout techniques, tables, forms, and server side includes.

We will continue with the book that was used in the first eight weeks, and I will continue to record the lectures/demonstrations and make them available online.

Texts and Materials:

Required Text: Head First HTML with CSS & XHTML by Freeman and Freeman, published by O'Reilly. The ISBN is 0-596-10197-X. You may purchase the book at the SRJC bookstores or online.

Required Online Lectures: I will record lectures/demonstrations of the material we cover and make them available to you on the Internet. You may access these recordings at any time and view them as many times as you wish. I have found that many students just don't take the time to READ the online materials thoroughly. As a result, they fall behind in class and/or struggle through the assignments without really understanding what they are doing. These lectures will SHOW you and TELL you, in an hour or two a week, what you are supposed to be doing. No excuses! (If you need captioning for these lectures, please let me know as soon as possible.)

Required Tools: You'll need a computer, a browser, and access to the Internet. Many PC people will use Internet Explorer as their browser, but I highly recommend Mozilla/Firefox too, since browsers continue to display web content slightly differently. Mac users will probably use Safari, but I would also like you to download a second browser to be sure your code is displaying consistently. Mozilla/Firefox, Chrome, and Opera are all acceptable. If you are an AOL user, however, you must download and configure two of the recommended browsers for use in this class. The AOL browser is problematic.

In this class you will start using an HTML editor to create your code. Most students enjoy the convenience of this software, but you may you may continue to use a simple text editor to create your files if you like - Notepad (Windows) or TextEdit (Mac). The use of Dreamweaver, Frontpage, or any other WYSIWYG HTML tool is not recommended because I want you to continue to develop your own code, not have it done for you. If one of these programs is your only option, then please use it in code mode, not drag and drop.

You will continue to incorporate images into your web pages, so you will need a simple image editor. Whatever you used in the first class will be fine.

Some of the handouts for this class are in PDF format, and, depending on your browser, you may need Adobe Reader to view them. This software can be downloaded free at http://get.adobe.com/reader/.

Grades:

There will be assignments each week and four online quizzes given throughout the class. I use a standard grading scale: 90% for an "A", 80% for a "B", 70% for a "C", and 60% for a "D". The class may be taken Pass/No Pass for those who don't need the grade and/or don't want the pressure. And, yes, a Pass grade counts toward a certificate!

Getting Help:

My job is to help you learn. I expect that most of our communication will be via email, but you can also come to see me in person during my office hours or by appointment. (You don't need an appointment to drop in during office hours.) You can also call my office, but, unless I'm in office hours, you'll probably have to leave a message. For the record, I check my email much more often than I check my voice mail.

You are not required to do any of your work in the computer lab at school, but, if you are having trouble, that's a good place to go. I have no scheduled lab hours, but many of the other instructors and lab assistants will be able to answer your questions.

Late Policy:

You will learn and retain more if you keep current with your assignments. I strongly encourage you to get started on them as soon as you can so that you can get help if you need it before the due date.

If your work is late, I take off 20%. If your work is not submitted within the next week, I take off another 20%. If your work is more than two weeks late, I will not accept it. I will usually grant an extension (no points off) for illness or a family emergency, but you must contact me ahead of time if you want your situation to be considered.

As you will see when you read the assignments, you have to notify me via email that your assignment is ready to grade. Quiz results are sent to me automatically, so you don't need to send a separate email for them. Since our week starts on a Monday, here are the rules:

- All quizzes and other assignments are due the following Sunday evening by midnight.
- I use the datestamp of your email (or the quiz notification) to determine if your work is on time.
