HTML 1 - Assignment 8

This week (actually less than a week) you will finish your web site and participate in peer reviews. Here is a list of the week's assignments:

  • finish and "present" your web site - 13 pts.
  • evaluate another student's web site - 5 pts.
  • evaluate the class - 2 pts.

Preparation:

  1. Online lecture: HTML 1, Week 8 - Wrap-up

  2. Text: none

  3. Handouts:
    What Class Next?
    What's in HTML 2?

  4. Week 7 Review - PowerPoint presentation covered in online lecture (.pdf format)
Week 7 Review - PowerPoint presentation covered in online lecture (.txt format - accessible)

For Credit (20 points total):

  1. Mount your web site (10 points):

You should return to the stylesheet you began when we started learning CSS and add rules to control the font and text properties of your web site. By Wednesday night, March 9, you should have your web site looking as good as possible, uploaded, and ready to go. Your site doesn't have to be of professional quality, but it should have the following characteristics:

    - 3-5 pages of content related to one topic
    - All pages linked together with a standard navigation bar
    - All pages have the same "look and feel", controlled by a single external stylesheet
    - All pages must validate, both XHTML and CSS, so be sure both buttons are there

  2. Each student will present his/her web site to the class (3 points):

On the Message Board in a thread named "Week 8 Discussion - Present your web site", please follow the instructions about how to present your web site. This must be done by Wednesday night so that the person critiquing your site (on Thursday or Friday) can understand it better. You should include items such as:
    - The purpose of your site
    - The features you used that make you particularly proud
    - The areas where you had trouble and are still not satisfied, if any
    - Any other information you would like to convey to the class

  3. Critique a classmate's web site (5 points):

IMPORTANT: Do not do this assignment before Thursday because students may be making changes to their site up until Wednesday at midnight.

On Thursday or Friday, March 10 or 11, critique the web site of one of your peers in the Class Gallery. I will tell you which site you will critique in an email on Thursday morning. Post your critique on the class Message Board in a the thread named "Week 8 - Peer Evaluations".

I find this to be one of the most interesting assignments of the class because people react so differently to the same stimulus. One person LOVES the background color and someone else finds it irritating. As web designers, we understand that "you can't please all the people all of the time", but we do need to know how others react to our work. Everyone has something to offer in terms of support and suggestions for improvement.

Below is a suggested format for your comments. I recommend that you copy and paste this into a word processing document, fill it out, and then copy the finished work into the window where you post to the Message Board. Please give thought and care to your comments, remembering that you are critiquing someone's "baby", but also be professional and honest about your reaction to the site. Constructive comments help others see what they can do to make their work better.

Here is what you have to include in your critique:
    - the name of the author - from the names on the left
    - the site topic
    - two things you like about the site
    - two suggestions for improvement
    - a ranking between 1-10 (with 10 as the highest)
    - any other comments you would like to include in your statement

This task, well done, earns you 5 points, and your ranking will influence the overall score of the site that you critique. Again, I urge you to be honest and professional in your assessment.

  4. Class Evaluation (2 points)

Please answer the following questions and send your answers to me by email:

    1. What did you enjoy most about the class?
    2. What did you enjoy least about the class?
    3. Did you view the Online Lectures posted for each week? If so, did you find them (choose one of the following and explain): indispensible, a great help but I could have survived without them, somewhat helpful, not helpful at all, I didn't use them.
    4. The course textbook was (choose one of the following and explain): indispensible, a great help but I could have survived without it, somewhat helpful, not helpful at all, I didn't use it.
    5. Generally speaking, did the course web site make sense to you? Can you offer suggestions for improvement?
    6. Were the assignments appropriate for helping you to learn the class content?
    7. Did the quizzes appropriately determine your level of understanding of the class content?
    8. Were your questions answered in a timely and helpful manner?
    9. Any additional comments?
    10. Please give the class an overall rating from 1 - 10 with 10 being the highest.
