| Dear
Theatre Lovers:
Do you need to be entertained? We thought so!
Let us entertain you
with our exciting 2009-2010
Season!
We open our season with the hilarious,
political farce Abraham Lincoln’s
Big, Gay Dance Party. You get to participate in the
evening by voting on the order in which we perform the scenes!
Next comes our holiday show,
the childhood classic The
Wizard of Oz. In late January, you will be thrilled
by Stories by Barbara Kingsolver. We will be staging
verbatim adaptations of her two
provocative, multicultural short stories “Rose-Johnny” and “Why
I am a Danger to the Public.” In
March, get ready to giggle with Shakespeare’s
raucous farce of mistaken identity, The
Comedy of Errors. In late April we’ll be dancing
our bobby socks off with the teenage,
rock and roll classic, Grease! And
finally, don’t miss our ever-popular Spring
Dance Concert.
Throughout this past year, you have generously
supported our student performers, technicians, and designers
by coming to see our shows, making donations, and writing letters
of support. Please keep it up! We need your support now, more
than ever. In turn, we promise to give you a year’s worth
of laughs, tears, intriguing ideas, and sassy dance numbers!

Why I am a Danger to the
Public
and Rose-Johnny
Directed by John
Shillington
Every word of these two multicultural short stories by this
renowned novelist (The Bean Tree and The Poisonwood Bible) will
come to life on the Newman Stage. In the first, an outspoken
Mexican-American single mother is unjustly jailed during a copper
mine strike, while the second tells the story of a young girl,
in 1950s rural Tennessee, and her unusual friendship with the
town outcast. At turns funny, insightful, and deeply moving,
both stories raise big questions in little packages.
Recommended for
age 15 and above. Contains strong language.

Take two sets of identical twins, separate them in infancy with
a shipwreck, give them the same names, let them grow up far apart,
have them finally end up in the same city without realizing it,
and what do you have? A maelstrom of marvelous madcap mayhem
that only Master Shakespeare could muster! Clad in classical
Elizabethan costumes, this crazy comedy will make you laugh until
you’re seeing double.
