Flex Program

The Fall 2014 Professional Development Activity Day is Friday, August 15, 2014.
The Spring 2015 Professional Development Activity Day is Thursday, February 12, 2015.

The Flex Program continues for the 2014-15 academic year. Please refer to the AFA website at for the complete language on Article 22, Professional Development.

The Mandatory and Flexible hours requirement for regular faculty members has a total obligation of 24 hours, and is prorated for those faculty members on pre-retirement workload reductions.

For regular faculty members, the mandatory hour requirement is 12 hours for the year (6 hours for the Fall PDA Day, and 6 hours for the Spring PDA Day). Your Flex hours obligation is 12.0 hours for the Academic year (4.5 hours per semester.) Flex hours can be completed at any time during the Academic year; just follow the deadlines. All mandatory and flexible hours must be completed and verified by May 4th, unless an "Intent to Complete a Pre-approved Activity" form has been filed by May 1st.

Faculty members on sabbatical leave or other leave will have an adjustment made to their obligation. There is no obligation while on leave or teaching a semester abroad. If a partial leave is in place, then a partial adjustment will be made to the hours of obligation.

Adjunct faculty flex obligations are equal to the total number of hours taught in full-semester classes on the designated days each semester. Refer to the Board approved Academic Calendar.

Flex Program Guidelines (Flex obligations for Faculty Members)

Regular Faculty:

  • 12 mandatory hours per academic year (two institutional 6-hour days on 8/15/2014 & 2/12/2015). There will be no “make up” for these hours.
  • 12 flexible hours - flex activities to be performed and verified between July 1, 2014 and May 4, 2015.
  • Go to your Faculty Portal or to to “Check Your Flex” obligation and monitor your flex account status on a regular basis.

Adjunct Faculty (includes Non-Credit, Unit A):

  • Your flex obligation for Fall 2014 is the total number of hours you are scheduled to teach full-semester classes scheduled on Monday and Friday.
  • Your Flex obligation for Spring 2015 is the total number of hours you teach full-semester classes scheduled on Thursday and Friday.
  • Go to your Faculty Portal or to to “Check Your Flex” obligation and monitor your flex account status on a regular basis.
  • Adjunct Faculty will be able to fulfill their obligation on the institutional day or through flex activities that take place during the semester in which they teach. Flex credit can be earned for pre-approved activities that take place during summer (beginning on July 1) for the fall semester or beginning during winter break for the spring semester.
  • Please note: Adjunct faculty run the risk of not being paid for flex hours completed in advance of the semester, if a change to their teaching schedule results in a change (decrease) to their flex obligation.

Flex credit is available for pre-approved staff development activities only.

Full Flex Program Guidelines are available on the Staff Development website at

Faculty members must submit a Flex Verification Form in order to receive Flex credit.

Professional Development Activity (PDA) Days
The program for PDA Days is developed by a participatory governance committee (the Professional Development Committee or PDC) consisting of faculty, classified, and management staff. PDA Day consists of a general session and workshops conducted by SRJC faculty and staff or possibly off-campus presenters. Speakers and workshops are sought out and selected on the basis of their relevance to the professional and institutional needs of the SRJC community. Evaluations are collected for all sessions and used to improve and develop future program offerings.

One day each semester is designated as the Institutional Day. Attendance on this day is mandatory for all regular faculty and may not be flexed. The program for the fall semester Institutional Day includes an address from the College President, as well as the Academic Senate and Classified Senate Presidents. The spring semester Institutional Day features the Brook Tauzer Faculty Lecture. The lecturer is an SRJC faculty member who is selected for teaching excellence by a committee consisting of former Tauzer Lecturers. Both the fall and spring Institutional Days also offer workshops related to institutional themes and the training needs of the faculty and staff.
