LENGTH: 24 hours, over a period of 4 days

ISW is a four day experience open
to all faculty geared toward:
- Providing a small group setting in which to work
on improvement of instruction skills.
- Placing the responsibility for learning onto the
individual participant.
- Encouraging experimentation and innovation in lesson
presentation.
- Developing skills in providing effective and helpful
feedback.
In addition, this workshop
- Is a non-intimidating teaching refresher.
- Provides an atmosphere for experimenting with innovative
teaching styles.
- Is short, intensive, and exciting.
- Counts as 2 units for professional growth.
The basic elements of an ISW include:
- A small group (5 participants)
- Two facilitators
- Each participant presenting three 10 minute mini-lessons
- Participants providing feedback on what helped and/or
hindered learning
- Videotaped feedback for immediate viewing
- Confidentiality
- A 24 hour time schedule (various options)
An ISW also normally includes:
- Identifying and discussing instructional & classroom
issues
- Exploring learning & teaching styles
- Designing outcomes and objectives
- Planning lessons
- Learning how to use AV media
The traditional mini-lesson include the following elements

provides a transition from an external focus to the lesson, and provides
motivation
Objective (outcomes)
- one format for stating a learning objective is:
- Audience - describe the participants
- Behavior - what performance will be observed
- Conditions - describe conditions of learning and
testing
- Degree - describe the performance indicators or testing
standards
Pre-test - assess
participants' current skill level
Participatory
learning - engage learners actively
Post-test -
measure learning against the objective
Summary - anchor
the learning into general life experience
The ISW can be offered in a variety of formats to suit
scheduling needs:
- Four consecutive 6 hour weekdays
- Two single weekends (Fri-Sat)
- Four weekdays, non-consecutive
- Four weekend days (consecutive weekends or alternating)
- Six 4 hour evenings or partial days
- Eight 3 hour evenings or partial days
Want to be a Facilitator?
ISW graduates (or ISWans) may proceed to
be certified as ISW facilitators by completing an ISW Facilitator Development
Workshop (FDW)

classified employee who wishes to learn effective presentation skills?
If so, a replica of the workshop has been created called Presentation
Skills Workshop (PSW).
