PETALUMA CAMPUS
Location: 680 Sonoma, Mountain Parkway,
Petaluma, CA 94954
Phone: 707-778-2411 (Administration
Office)
The Sonoma County Junior College District first began offering classes in Petaluma in 1964. In January, 1995, with the dedication of the permanent Petaluma Campus, the District solidified its commitment to post-secondary education in Southern Sonoma County. Located on a 40-acre site, the 64,000 square foot facility is the first of three phases and can accommodate an overall enrollment of 7,000 students. In April 1999, the Center was formally recognized as the Petaluma Campus, the second campus of the Sonoma County Junior College District.
Since it’s opening in 1995, the Petaluma Campus has experienced tremendous growth in both its day and evening programs. Courses are offered at the Petaluma Campus and other Petaluma locations. The SRJC Technology Academy at the Petaluma Campus specializes in workforce training in technological areas.
SRJC’s Petaluma Campus offers a wide range of general education courses during day and evening hours enabling students to complete requirements necessary for transfer to a California State University (CSU), University of California (UC), or to earn an Associate in Arts or Associate in Sciences Degree through Santa Rosa Junior College.
The occupational programs offered in Petaluma emphasize training for the business environment of the future using state-of-the-art computer labs. A wide variety of courses are offered in the areas of computer software applications, business administration, management, business office technology, accounting, computer programming, networking, telecommunications, and multi-media. Additionally, the Petaluma Campus supports the development of basic skills through the College Skills Program.
Classes are offered on the semester system with a summer session. During the Fall and Spring semesters, late-start and short courses are also offered to meet the student’s needs. Short courses may vary in length from one-day, weekend, and one week up to several weeks.
Students planning to attend the Petaluma Campus may arrange for academic counseling, assessment, financial aid, orientation, and registration at the Campus or through the Santa Rosa Campus.
A full array of assessment testing in Math, English, ESL and Chemistry is administered at the Petaluma Campus. Students attending the Petaluma Campus or any off-campus location are entitled to any and all services provided by the District.
The Petaluma campus is actively supported in the community through the Friends of the Petaluma Campus, an auxiliary committee of the Santa Rosa Junior College Foundation with the overall purpose of supporting the development of the Petaluma Campus.

There may be a short wait to use a copier, so please plan ahead to avoid rush jobs. As a reminder, you can always leave any of your copy or graphics order requests for the Faculty Support Assistant to process by completing a blue copy work order for each copy job. It is also possible to email your copy order to the Faculty Support Assistant. Allow three working days (Monday through Thursday) for completion. Finished projects will then be delivered to your mailbox at the Petaluma Campus.

Substantial graphics projects should be submitted in the tray on the desk in room 120 and they will be forwarded to the Graphics Department on the Santa Rosa Campus. Please note the Graphics Services Department normal lead-time requires 3-4 days for delivery to Petaluma. Completed projects will be delivered by the daily courier service to the faculty mailroom at the Campus. The courier arrives between 1:00-2:30 p.m. daily. In addition to our own materials, Petaluma Campus students have full access to the collections on the Santa Rosa campus, Plover Library, as well as borrowing privileges at Sonoma State University.
All entering students seeking to earn the AA degree are required to fulfill the 1 credit Area I Information Literacy requirement. | MAKE-UP EXAMS |
MAKE UP EXAMS
Administration of exams is considered the teaching responsibility of the classroom instructor. Giving make-up exams for students who have missed class due to illness or a legitimate absence is the prerogative of the individual instructor. The instructor’s policy should be clearly stated on the course syllabus. Instructors may follow any of the current practices listed below.
CURRENT PRACTICES FOR MAKE UP EXAMS
Instructors may choose to offer no accommodation for make-up exams; the student receives an F or 0 for a missed exam. Instructors may choose to drop one or two of the student’s lowest grades; a missed exam is counted as one of these. Instructors may proctor their own make-up exams in an available unoccupied classroom, pre-arranged through the Scheduling Technician in the Office of Administration at x3928; during class time on the first day back from the student’s absence; or during the meeting of a different class or section of the course. Instructors may also offer a make-up exam that does not require proctoring. In this case, the instructor arranges with the student a location suitable to the exam, the student agrees to adhere to any restrictions in taking the exam, and the instructor makes individual arrangements with the student to return the exam in a timely manner. The Petaluma Campus staff lounge and offices in general are not appropriate locations for make-up exams.
These guidelines are currently under review. |
MEDIA SERVICES |
Location: Petaluma
Campus
Phone: 707-778-3985
Audio Visual: Most classrooms are equipped with a VCR, monitor, overhead projector, and screen. Faculty will be issued keys, which open the A-V cabinets in all classrooms. These keys are available through the Administration Office. If a classroom does not have the equipment you need, contact Media Services at Ext. 3985. We have carts with portable overhead projectors, one VCR/monitor, slide projectors, audio equipment, computer projectors, digital cameras, laptop computers and more. Contact Media Services (Ext. 3985) to reserve this equipment. Please provide one day’s notice for use of this equipment. Media material can be divided into two major types - (soft) media, and (hard) media. For clarity in this document (soft) media is defined as a source of information stored on a particular format (16mm film, VHS videotape, compact discs, audio cassettes, CD-ROM’s, filmstrips, etc.).
From here forward, we will simply refer to this as media. The second major category is (hard) media. (Hard) media is defined as a piece of equipment used to reproduce sound and/or picture (16mm projectors, TV monitors, video tape players (VCR’s), public address systems, slide projectors, computer projectors, and audio cassette players). For this document, we will refer to this type as media equipment. Below you will find “HOW TO” procedures for accessing the different type of media available though the District’s Media Services for use at the Petaluma Campus.
Media Collection: The District maintains a central collection of media materials located in the Plover Library - Media Services at the Santa Rosa Campus. An additional collection is located at the Petaluma Campus. The focus of material for the Petaluma collection should be items that are constantly requested at all District sites, or material supporting unique course offerings at the Petaluma Campus. Items to be purchased for the Petaluma collection should be requested through the Petaluma Librarians or your Department Chair. Non-copyrighted material used for individual student viewing will be duplicated as needed and copies will be available for in-library viewing by students (Work Orientation Experience, Campus lectures, Instructional, Career Development).
Media Circulation: The scheduling of District media will be coordinated by the Media Circulation desk at the Santa Rosa Campus. Instructors should call Media Services 527-4261 to reserve the material. Remember to state that the media is needed for the Petaluma Campus. The requested media will be delivered to your individual mailbox prior to the requested time or held for pick up at Media Services, Plover Library (depending on your instructions). Petaluma users will be responsible to return media to Media Services, Mahoney Library, Petaluma, as soon as the material has been used. Please do not deposit videos, CDs or tapes into the book drop as this can cause damage. Media equipment is distributed throughout the District based on proven need. In most cases, equipment is permanently assigned to a location when the equipment is needed more often than three class periods in a week throughout a semester. However, it is the District’s intent to make equipment conveniently available while maintaining a secure environment and maximizing the District’s resources. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE EQUIPMENT FROM A CLASSROOM AND USE IT IN A DIFFERENT CLASSROOM! If you are using a classroom that does not contain what you need, it is your responsibility to arrange for the equipment to be delivered.
Media Services at Petaluma Campus has been assigned a “core” set of equipment to be circulated in the Petaluma area. Additionally all classrooms have been equipped with equipment that is necessary for general lecture assignments. If you are teaching in a new room check the “Equipment in the rooms” list available at either Administration or the Circulation desk in the library. If you find that the room does not contain the equipment you need, then call to schedule the equipment. The Mahoney Library circulation desk at the Petaluma Campus will coordinate the circulation of equipment not permanently installed in classrooms (video in some rooms, slides in some rooms, etc.).
Instructors should call Petaluma Media Services at ext. 3985 at least 24 hours in advance to make arrangements. The following information is needed: type of equipment needed, Instructors name and a callback phone number, the date, time, and length the equipment is needed, and the room number. Students or staff to the room can deliver the equipment by the starting time indicated, or the instructor can pick it up. The equipment can be retrieved after the ending time stated or the instructor can return. If you do not plan in advance, you will be responsible for pick-up and return of the equipment. NOTE: Due to security concerns camcorders, laptops and computer projectors are only available by in-person pickup.
Teleconferencing: The College has the ability to provide video conferencing services to the campus and the community, with video conferencing systems. These systems are used to provide two-way interactive visual and audio communications. Both systems are capable of communications with remote sites throughout the world. Reservations to use the unit must be made in advance by calling Media Services, Petaluma, ext. 3985 and Santa Rosa, ext. 4261.
Reporting Equipment Trouble:The Technical Services area of Media Services will coordinate maintenance of the equipment. Biweekly visits are scheduled. Problems with equipment can be reported by phone to the Santa Rosa Campus @ (527)-4771 or in Petaluma @ (778)-3985. Emergency visits will be made, based on the nature of the failure (i.e. no replacement available) and will be determined by the manager of Media Services. The following information is needed: Instructors name and a callback phone number, the date of failure, the Room #, and any “soft” media that was being used. Please describe the problem as specifically as possible. Equipment will be tagged with a maintenance work order and a media tech will follow up by contacting the instructor.
Both media departments need to be notified when teleconferencing between the two SRJC sites. At the Petaluma Campus, the teleconferencing unit can be set up in Rooms 154, 155, or the Media Room, 149. The unit in Santa Rosa can be set up in any of the Plover Library meeting rooms. All uses of the system (both college functions and public use) will result in a direct charge back to department budget for any connection. Please confer with the Department Chair or Manager prior to making reservations. If the department or program requires an operator for setup or operation, Media Services will hire a technician to support the event. The hourly rate is approximately $15/hr with a minimum of 2 hours. College events are coordinated directly by Media Services. No room fees are charged.
Cable Access in the classrooms: It is possible to have a live television signal in any room that has video playback equipment. To schedule a viewing in your classroom, contact Media Services at the Mahoney Library, Ext. 3985. Information needed for this will be station (CBS, CNN, etc.), time, and day of the week. Twenty-four hours advance notice is required.
Magnetic/Temperature & General concerns:
DO NOT -
Set a telephone on or near the tapes as the action of the ringing bell can erase the program material.
Set near speakers of any kind! Videotape like cool, dry air—never store tapes in your car.
Leave tapes where direct sunlight could cause them to heat up. Videotape will start to show signs of wear after 125 viewings.
When tapes are purchased, we secure a “Life of Tape” license.
We are not allowed to make copies. When the tape wears out, we have to buy a new one.
The Media listed in the catalog is for classroom use. Individual student use is not allowed, with the following exceptions: An instructor can authorize students to do make-up, research or extra credit viewing. However we must be notified in writing. If you don’t want to take up class time, it would be better to schedule library room 155 for small group viewing. This will at least extend the life of the tape. When a student comes to the counter they must know: the exact title to be viewed, the instructor’s name, and the course number.
Please remember that videotapes have a limited life, don’t grant open-ended requests. All tapes in the Lectures and Instructional series are available for all students viewing without instructor approval. 16MM Films cannot be shown to students individually.

| MESSAGES |
Students calling an instructor with voice mail access, will be transferred to the voice mail extension to leave a message. If an instructor does not have voice mail, he/she should encourage students to leave a message at 778-3917, which will be checked on Monday-Thursday by the Faculty Support Assistant. When students call 778-3917, please tell them they must leave their name, instructor name, class, a number where they can be reached, and a brief message. Please use your syllabus to inform students how to contact you. It is important that instructors check voice mail and mail boxes on a regular basis.

OFFICE
ASSIGNMENTS |
Offices will be assigned first to full-time faculty members, then to adjunct faculty as space allows. If you currently have a share agreement with a full-time faculty member, you will need to reconfirm that arrangement each term and notify Administration of your location. To accommodate your needs as much as possible, we ask that you work with your fellow faculty members to ensure equitable office arrangements. It is the responsibility of faculty to develop a time-sharing schedule for individual offices and to report your hours to the Administration Office per the student consultation hours form issued at the beginning of each term. Cabinets and desk space should not be locked unless all faculty sharing the office have agreed on storage space. If you have keys to the desk or cabinets, please be sure not to lock them unless other faculty members also have access to keys. Contact the Administration Office at 778-3927 for assistance.

| PARKING
PERMITS |
Faculty, staff, and students must display a current parking permit to park at the Petaluma Campus. Students may purchase permits in Business Services, Accounting or Admissions and Records for $60/semester. If an instructor teaches on both campuses and has been given a lot assignment on the Santa Rosa campus, permits should be purchased in Santa Rosa to retain the lot assignment. Permits for faculty and staff at the Petaluma Campus may be purchased from Business Services in Room 113 Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Permits for full-time Faculty and Staff are $120/year. Permits for adjunct faculty and regular classified staff, working less than 60%, are $60/year ($30/semester). Faculty permits may be purchased by check during the evening through Admissions and Records. The permit will be put in your mailbox on the next working day. During the first week of the semester, faculty are requested to announce to all classes the parking permit requirements. Please make arrangements in advance for the benefit of any guest speaker that you may have to your classroom. Business Services or the Administration Office can issue a one-day temporary permit for a guest speaker.
