Are Union Dues Tax Deductible? Wende Wahl |
According to IRS Tax Publication 529 "Miscellaneous Deductions for Use in Preparing 2001 Returns," (available online at: http://www.irs.gov) page 7, taxpayers who
itemize may deduct dues paid for union membership. The deduction for union dues is limited however, to the following restriction: one cannot deduct that portion of union dues which is paid or
incurred for political lobbying expense. (Page 14 of Publication 529, "Lobbying Expenses.")
SEIU/SRJC union members can deduct 77% of the total SEIU/SRJC Chapter union dues paid during the tax year 2001. The remaining percentage represents the portion collected for the purpose of
political lobbying by the SEIU.
As always, you should seek the advice of a professional tax preparer pertaining to your own individual income tax matters.
