ANNOUNCEMENT OF CANDIDATE SELECTED AS SUPERINTENDENT/PRESIDENT
The Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Frank Chong as its next Superintendent/President. The Board selected Dr. Chong from a field of 42 applicants.
Dr. Chong will succeed current President, Dr. Robert F. Agrella, who is retiring after 21 years in this position. Dr. Agrella’s career at SRJC has been highlighted by many significant accomplishments on behalf of the college.
A Presidential Search Advisory Committee comprised of college-wide representatives was instrumental in making a recommendation to the Board of Trustees regarding finalists for the position. Professional Personnel Leasing, Inc., a search consulting firm, also assisted the Board in the search process.
Dr. Chong is currently the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Community Colleges at the United States Department of Education in Washington, D.C. He formerly served as President of Laney College in Oakland and Mission College in Santa Clara. He also held the position as Campus Dean and Dean of Student Affairs at San Francisco City College. In addition, he served as Special Assistant to the Speaker of the California Assembly, and as executive director of a Bay Area community-based non-profit organization.
The SRJC Board of Trustees is confident that Dr. Chong will be a great asset to the College and the Santa Rosa community. According to Rick Call, Board of Trustees President, “The Board is confident that Dr. Chong is the best fit to lead Santa Rosa Junior College considering the current and future challenges facing our college. Higher education is changing and we feel Dr. Chong possesses the skills needed to help guide us through the next phase of our long history of success.“
Dr. Chong’s appointment will commence on January 11, 2012. He is very excited about joining the college and becoming an active member of the community. Dr. Chong states "I am grateful for the trust that the Board of Trustees has placed in me and honored to become part of the vibrant, growing Sonoma County community. I look forward to working with the faculty, students, staff and the community to carry on the legacy of one of California’s oldest and finest community colleges and to help maintain Santa Rosa Junior College as one of the leading community colleges in America."
Dr. Chong has a bachelor of arts degree from UC Berkeley in social welfare and Asian American Studies, and a master’s degree in public administration from Harvard University. He also completed the Educational Management program at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education, and earned his doctorate in educational administration, leadership and technology from Dowling College in Oakdale, New York.
The Board appreciated the spirit of collaboration and interest in the success of this search demonstrated throughout the college community. In particular, we would like to acknowledge the following: the Presidential Search Advisory Committee, the Human Resources Department, Professional Personnel Leasing, Inc., and the assistance from several college departments/staff including but not limited to the President’s Office, the Associated Students, Public Relations, Graphics Services, the Petaluma Campus staff, Information Technology, Media Services, Facilities Operations and District Police.
Dr. Chong’s appointment will be formally announced by the Board at the December 13, 2011 meeting. Additional details regarding a welcoming ceremony will be announced in the near future.
