ICDL is an internationally recognized training and certification program that provides a
way for people to raise their knowledge level and confidence in fundamental computer
concepts and skills.
It allows everyone to document their acquired knowledge and skills
through a series of performance-based tests, which will be taken at their corporate
computer centers, human resource office or at Santa Rosa Junior College.
ICDL certification means that you have mastered the fundamental concepts of Information
Technology (IT) and are able to use a personal computer and common computer
applications at a fundamental level of competence. Certification tells a prospective
employer or other sponsoring organization that you passed:
- One (1) theoretical test that assesses knowledge of the fundamental concepts of Information Technology (IT),
and
- Six (6) performance-based tests that assess competence in using a personal computer and working with common computer software applications.
"Upon successful completion of the 7 ICDL tests, you will receive an ICDL Computer Competency Certificate."
Is ICDL a new program?
The program is new to the U.S., but ICDL has been operating with great success in over
50 other countries, with total registered participants approaching 1.5 million and growing.
It is rapidly becoming a global computer literacy standard.
Who is ICDL for?
ICDL is a program for anyone who wants and needs to use a personal computer
competently. Participation requires no prior knowledge of Information Technology (IT)
concepts or computer operating experience. The skills required to pass the tests and get
an International Computer Driving License can be attained through training programs and
materials especially designed for the ICDL program.
How is ICDL different from other training and certification programs?
ICDL differs from other training and certification programs for several reasons: it is
vendor-neutral, i.e. it can be adapted to users of most major commercial platforms
(Microsoft, Lotus, etc.); the certificate is recognized on a world-wide basis and the
programs offered in participating countries are all based on one standard syllabus and
question set; it is targeted at the full spectrum of a countrys population; and it is
monitored and supported by the key computing societies in each participating country and
the sponsoring ECDL Foundation.
