Short Stories
Short Story Index

This index locates short stories published in collections, called anthologies, and selected periodicals. Stories are indexed under Author, Title and Subject.

   
Author Search: Look under author to locate the title of the collection or periodical that contains the short story.
Example of a short story from a collection:

  • Look up title of the collection in the Library Catalog to see if the library has a copy of the book.
  • Consult the List of Collections Indexed in the back of the volume to find editor and publishing information, if needed.

  • Consult the Periodicals Holdings List to see if the library owns the magazine.
Title Search: Look under story title to locate author. Next do an author search as detailed above.

Subject Search: Look up a subject of interest. After locating author of the story proceed as in author search above.

Short Story Criticism

Short story criticism may be found primarily in journal articles and books. To find books, use the Subject option in the Library Catalog (OPAC). Type in the author's name, last name first. This will find books about the author's work. For journal articles and essays use the indexes and reference books described below.

Print Sources  

The reference librarian can help you to find the following sources and explain how to use them.

 
Short Story Criticism is a multi-volume set which lists brief excerpts from critical articles on a variety of short stories.  Use the cumulated indexes in the most recent volume to locate criticism on your story.  (Ref/PN/3373/.S56)
 
Masterplots II: Short Story Series This set includes plot summaries and brief discussions of themes, meanings, styles and techniques. It lists short stories alphabetically by title. (Ref/PN/44/.M3/S5)
 
Twentieth Century Short Story Explication is a set of reference books used to generate a list of criticism from both books and journal articles. Look under your author's name and check to see if your story is included. Start with the original volume and move on to the supplements. If your author's work is very recent, start with the supplements.(Ref /PN/3373/.W34)
 

If you find listings for useful articles that the library does not have, you may order copies through InterLibrary loan. This service usually takes a minimum of 10 days. Check with a librarian for more information.

 
Electronic Sources  
Literature Resource Center is a major source of biographies and critical information on authors. Search under author, last name first.
   
Twayne's Authors Series provides critical introduction to the lives and works of over 600 writers. Search under author, last name first.
   
Expanded Academic ASAP (InfoTrac) lists journal and magazine articles on many topics including literary criticism. Do a subject guide search under author, last name first.
