Assessment
Assessment

What is assessment?

The assessment process is designed to ensure that students are placed in the appropriate math and English classes, as well as classes in other disciplines. There are separate tests for English, English as a Second Language, chemistry, and various levels of math. Test results do not effect admission to SRJC but may effect the classes in which you can enroll. Students have an option to retest if they believe they may score higher (see specific information under Placement Tests & GED).

Who should take the placement tests?

All new college students are encouraged to take the English placement before seeing a counselor. These results will be helpful in determining appropriate level classes in many disciplines.

You must take the appropriate test if you plan to register in an English, math or English as a Second Language course. If you have completed English, math or chemistry courses at another college, you are not required to take the placement exams, but they may be helpful in determining the best placement for you in SRJC courses.

How & when do I take the tests?

Testing is available year round at both the Santa Rosa and Petaluma campuses. There is no fee to take the test and all testing material will be provided on the day of the test. Some testing sessions are available on a drop-in, space-available basis. Other sessions require that you contact Assessment Services to reserve a seat. We recommend you arrive early, as those who come late will not be admitted after the test begins.

English as a Second Language (ESL) tests are available at both campuses and an appointment is required at the Santa Rosa Campus.

What you will need to take placement tests:

  • Application to SRJC is required
  • Photo I.D. is required
  • Know your SRJC Student I.D. number. You are issued this number when you complete an application to the college.

What does my placement score mean?

Test results are available next business day. The results indicate the highest level in which you can register. The level of English and math that you must complete is dependent on your educational goal. Students planning to transfer for a bachelor's degree will have to complete higher level English and math classes than is required for the Associate Degree. Many certificate programs do not require traditional English & math classes.
