College Skills College Skills offers open-entry, open-exit Basic Skills Labs to help students brush up and improve reading, writing, and/or math skills, as well as prepare for the GED test. Instruction is provided in a self-paced, supportive, and stress-free learning environment on the Santa Rosa and Petaluma campuses, at Lytton Springs in Healdsburg, at the Sebastopol Teen Center, and at the Sheppard Elementary School in Santa Rosa. Evening and Saturday sections for Spanish-speaking students are held at the Worker's Center, Elsie Allen High School, and Lincoln Elementary School in Santa Rosa, and on the Santa Rosa and Petaluma campuses. A section on the Santa Rosa Campus provides Vocational English as a Second Language for non-native English-speaking students. Enrollment in the Academic Skills Labs is open throughout the semester. To register for the Santa Rosa Campus section, attend an orientation session on Mondays throughout the semester at 9:00 AM or 5:00 PM in Analy Village, Room 601. For the Petaluma Campus and off-campus sections, go directly to the class to register. College Skills also offers credit classes in basic reading, writing, math, spelling, test-taking strategies, and other college preparatory skills. Disability Resources Department The Disability Resources Department facilitates equal access
to community college education through services and specialized instruction for students
with physical, learning, psychological, and communication disabilities. Several programs
are included in this department:
ESL (English as a Second Language) Department The ESL Program offers assessment, counseling services, and
a supportive environment for second language students who wish to improve their English
reading, writing, and speaking skills, and for those who wish to prepare for the
workplace, certificate and vocational programs or transfer to the four-year institutions.
Counseling appointments can be made by calling 527-4451 or 527-4382 Santa Rosa; 778-3924,
Petaluma. SRJC has numerous resources to help students with math. There are two labs with mathematics software. The College Skills lab has software and instructional assistance for arithmetic, pre-algebra, and beginning algebra. The math lab in 1733 Shuhaw has software for algebra through calculus and other sciences such as chemistry, biology, and physics. Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement California Community
College Program (MESA) is a rigorous academic support program that strives to increase
the number of educationally disadvantaged community college students who transfer
to four-year institutions and earn a degree in a math-based or science-based field.
Students who qualify for this program (must be at the Math 155 level or higher) receive
numerous support services to assist them in transferring to schools to complete a
bachelor's degree in a math or science field. The Puente Project is a two-semester sequence of reading/composition
and counseling courses that focus on the Chicano/Latino experience. Mentoring is
provided by members of the Latino professional community. Additional program activities
are designed to help students participate fully in academics and career preparation. The Tutorial Center provides tutors and materials at not cost for SRJC students needing assistance in their regular coursework. The people who work in the Tutorial Center are Senior Instructional Assistants who are experts in the subjects they tutor and who also enjoy helping others succeed. Students don't have to be in trouble to use this service; many students come to the Tutorial Center to maintain their "A's" and "B's". Group, individual, and drop-in tutoring are provided. The tutorial program offers tutoring in ASL, Astronomy, Biology,
Business, Chemistry, Economics, English, ESL, Foreign Languages, Geography, History,
Math, Philosophy, Physics, and other requested subjects. Drop-in tutoring is available
for math, chemistry and for writing assignments. Tutors are paid for their services.
Interested students should apply. Offers tutorial assistance to students with whatever writing
problems they have. Students may come with an assignment for an English class or
any other class, for a personal tutorial on writing problems, or to use a computer
to work on a writing assignment. To participate in the Writing Center, sign up for
English 770. Students who are not enrolled can drop in on a space available basis
to use a computer. Internet access for research is available. |
