A major represents your main educational interest, providing focus for your college studies. You should choose a major that interests and challenges you. It may be easier to choose a major if you have identified a career goal.

Some careers may require a specific major. For example if you want to become an engineer or nurse, you will major in that subject area. For other careers you might major in a subject area that is related but not required. A business executive might have majored in business, international relations, economics, or communications. An attorney may have majored in political science, English, liberal studies, or any other major where they developed strong writing and critical thinking skills.

If you don't have a career in mind (and many students entering college do not), consider enrolling in one of these courses:

  • Counseling 62, Introduction to Career Development or
  • Counseling 161.2, Career Assessment Research

The Career Center also has many resources to help you clarify your goals
