the Certificate of Competency may be part of a "ladder" of skills, beginning with job entry skills and leading to a full Career Certificate, or may constitute a skill set that enables the student to upgrade or advance in an existing career. Programs are approved by the California Community College Chancellor's office.

The Nursery Technician Certificate prepares students to engage in the propagation, growing and marketing of plants for use in the home, business or the landscape greenhouse and nursery operation; or to help support that activity in allied sales and service occupations. The program provides a solid foundation of plant knowledge and nursery, garden center and computer applications skills to equip students to work effectively in nurseries, retail garden centers, and entepreneurial enterprises.
The Nursery Technician Skills Certificate program is designed as one rung in a career ladder. Since a core component of the courses is also required for other SRJC horticulture certificate programs, students may earn the Nursery Management or Landscape Management Career Certificate by completing additional courses and are well prepared to enter a variety of jobs with the preparation for rapid advancement within their chosen occupations.
The program emphasizes hands-on learning and most courses incorporate lab activities that apply knowledge and skills in realistic settings. The program is actively supported by the local horticulture industry.
The Nursery Technician Certificate will be awarded upon fulfillment of the 17.5 units of requirements with a grade of "C" or better.
The requirements for this certificate are effective beginning the semester shown below. If you began working on this certificate before the effective semester, you may not be affected by any changes to the program.
