Career Certificates are intended to certify that students successfully completing this program are prepared to enter the careers associated with this certificate. They usually take at least one to two years to complete. These programs are approved by the California Community College Chancellor's Office.

The Nursery Management Certificate prepares students to advance to management positions in nurseries that propagate, grow and market plants for use in the home, business or the landscape. The program provides a solid foundation of plant knowledge and nursery, garden center, computer applications and management skills to equip students to embark on a successful and rewarding career in the nursery industry.
The Nursery Management Certificate program is designed as the top rung in a career ladder. Students are well prepared to enter a variety of jobs with the preparation for rapid advancement within their chosen occupations.
The program emphasizes hands-on learning and most courses incorporate lab activities that apply knowledge and skills in realistic settings. The program is actively supported by the local horticulture industry.
The Nursery Management certificate will be awarded upon fulfillment of the 34.5 units of requirements with a grade of "C" or better.
Horticulture, which involves the growing, selling, planting and servicing of plants and landscapes for human environments, is one of the fastest growing industries in America. The landscape industry in California is one of the state's largest industries. University studies have consistently found this dynamic, growing sector represents over $12 billion in sales and 130,000 employees. In addition, designed and maintained landscapes cover more than 1.6 million acres in California.
The landscape and nursery industry in Sonoma County has expanded dramatically in the last decade. Retail nurseries and full-service garden centers have seen substantial increases in sales from previous years, and new wholesale and retail nursery businesses are flourishing.This industry-wide expansion has been accompanied by an increase in the demand for employees with the skills to operate, supervise and manage nursery operations.
Men and women who possess nursery management skills, find employment in full service garden centers, wholesale nurseries, and other entrepreneurial enterprises. Representative job positions include propagator, grower, inventory controller, field foreperson, field superintenent, general manager, sales manager, nursery or greenhouse manager, plant doctor, marketing director, shift supervisor and shipping foreperson.
The requirements for this certificate are effective beginning the semester shown below. If you began working on this certificate before the effective semester, you may not be affected by any changes to the program. Consult with a counselor or department chair to determine your eligibility to complete the certificate under previous requirements.
