Administration of Justice/Public Safety

Santa Rosa Junior College is an Accredited Regional Fire Academy certified by the California State Board of Fire Services, and the State Fire Marshall's Office.
From a broad perspective, the purpose of fire service is to protect life and property. This is accomplished by training in Fire Prevention, Public Education, Fire Suppression,(wildland and structure) Arson Investigation, Emergency Medical Services, Heavy Resue, and Hazardous Material Management.
The requirements for this certificate are effective beginning the semester shown below. If you began working on this certificate before the effective semester, you may not be affected by any changes to the program. Consult with a counselor or department chair to determine your eligibility to complete the certificate under previous requirements.

Course is offered in the Spring and Fall semesters and is a 24 week program.
This course is conducted by Santa Rosa Junior College in cooperation with the Marin-Sonoma Training Officers Association. It is a basic Firefighter 1 Academy conforming to the standards for certification by the State Board of Fire Services, and the Office of the State Fire Marshal, with one exception. This academy does not include required emergency medical care skills. Training to fulfill these requirements is available through SRJC, American Red Cross, and other local sources.
The Academy includes 384 hours of instruction in basic firefighting skills, personnel rules and regulations, professional organizations, elementary fire behavior, fire control techniques, firefighting tactics and strategy, fire ground safety and operations, apparatus and equipment operations and maintenance, fire investigation, report writing and physical fitness.
This is a 12-unit course applicable towards a Certificate in Fire Technology. With a Firefighter 1 Academy diploma and an Emergency Care for First Responder or an EMT card, you will have met the academic requirements for certification as a Firefighter. The State Board of Fire Services and the Office of the State Fire Marshall also requires six months experience as a paid Firefighter, or one year as a volunteer, before actual state certification is granted.
