Career Certificates are intended to certify that students successfully completing this program are prepared to enter the careers associated with this certificate. They usually take at least one to two years to complete. These programs are approved by the California Community College Chancellor's Office.

PROGRAM

Santa Rosa Junior College Fire Technology Program is accredited by the Office of the State Fire Marshall and the State Board of Fire Services as an accredited regional fire academy. Accreditation was granted 16 August 1995.


OCCUPATION

The program provides practical and technical instruction to meet the requirements of various fire service agencies at the local, State, and Federal levels. Fire fighting is one of the world's most honored but hazardous occupations. It is the duty of every fire department to save lives and reduce injuries and property losses. By becoming firefighters, people join an organization rich in heritage of dedication, unselfish sacrifice and inspired human action.


EMPLOYMENT

From a broad perspective, the purpose of fire service is to protect life and property. This is accomplished by training in Fire Prevention, Public Education, Fire Suppression, Arson Investigation, Emergency Medical Services, Heavy Rescue, and Hazardous Material Management.Each fire department requires a physical agility test.The fire academy reviews and administers a physical agility test. A valid drivers license may be required for class "C" and/or "B"

The requirements for this certificate are effective beginning the semester shown below. If you began working on this certificate before the effective semester, you may not be affected by any changes to the program. Consult with a counselor or department chair to determine your eligibility to complete the certificate under previous requirements.

PROGRAM PREREQUISITES

This certificate has program prerequisites. You must complete the following coursework or have equivalent experience or education before you can be considered for admission to the program. In order to receive this certificate, you must receive a "C" or better in all course requirements and electives. NOTES

A Certificate of Completion in Fire Technology will be granted upon fulfillment of the 15 unit core courses, plus 15 additional certificate electives. Certificate elective units may also be earned through approved in-service courses. Please refer to the Course Descriptions at the back of the College Catalog, for a complete listing of these Fire Technology 200-299 courses.

Up to 8.0 units of the above Emergency Medical Care courses and up to 2.0 units of particular Administration of Justice courses may be applied toward the required number of certificate electives.

Students desiring a career in a fire department should complete the Certificate in Fire Technology and are encouraged to complete the A. S. Degree. State certification also requires completion of the Firefighter I Academy. In addition, in-service training courses are provided for firefighters and fire officers.

The Fire Academy prerequisite of FIRE 71 can be waived if you have 6 months experience with a fire department as a volunteer, etc. A letter from the fire chief is required. This does not waive the requirement to complete the courses.
