Certificates of Completion give competency in specific skills that may enable the student to upgrade or advance in an existing career. These certificates are generally of short duration and narrow in scope. Completion Certificates are not designed to provide the qualifications necessary to enter a job or career.

PROGRAM

This program provides technical and practical knowledge and skills to meet the requirements of the California Administrative Code to gain certification in California. The job of the Emergency Medical Technician is to provide basic life support for the sick and injured in the pre-hospital or emergency room setting. Many fire service and law enforcement positions require an Emergency Medical Technician Certificate as a prerequisite.


OCCUPATION

Basic level course primarily designed to meet the California State Department of Health lecture requirements for the emergency medical technician who functions on an operational ambulance. Students are able to apply principles of anatomy, physiology and communications as they relate to the assessment of the sick and injured and rendering pre-hospital basic life support. Students will apply the above knowledge to develop manipulative skills necessary to the practice of an EMT. Student must be 18 years of age by course completion for State Department of Health certification.


EMPLOYMENT

Many fire service and law enforcement positions require an Emergency Medical Technician Certificate as prerequisite for employment. The job of the Emergency Medical Technician is to provide basic life support for the sick and injured in the pre-hospital or emergency room setting.


DATE

The requirements for this certificate are effective beginning the semester shown below. If you began working on this certificate before the effective semester, you may not be affected by any changes to the program. Consult with a counselor or department chair to determine your eligibility to complete the certificate under previous requirements.

NOTES

*A Certificate of Completion will be granted upon successful fulfillment of the 5 units of major requirements.

Emergency Medical Care 274 has a prerequisite of Emergency Medical Care 290 or equivalent, and current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation-CPR for the Health Provider.

Emergency room experience (8 hours) and ambulance experience (8 hours) are a required component of Emergency Medical Care 274. Prior arrangements for this experience will be made as part of class curriculum.

Lecture /lab requirement for EMT 1A certification. Students will be required to attend assigned weekend activities as scheduled.
