Students are asked to perform a prepared solo musical selection from the standard repertoire specific to the individual discipline. A student may choose to perform up to two selections in contrasting styles, or may perform one selection that contains variations of contrasting elements.
Suggested Repertoire Considerations
An étude or the 1st movement (or excerpt) of a sonata. Suggested composers: Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, Chopin, etc.
A vocal selection from the standard art song or operatic literature; this may be in Italian, English, German or French (i.e., songs by Caldara, Scarlatti, etc., or Vaughan Williams, Britten, Copland, etc., or Schubert, Brahms, etc., or Debussy, Fauré, etc., or from operas by Mozart, Puccini, Rossini, etc. (In some cases, musical theatre literature is acceptable, but please check first!)
Strings, Woodwinds, Brass & Guitar
A selection or two short selections or excerpt(s) from the standard solo repertoire or an étude demonstrating contrasting style and tempi (fast vs. slow and lyrical). Suggested composers - Bach, Brahms, Ferling (studies), Finzi, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Telemann, Schubert, Villa Lobos, Vivaldi, etc.
One étude or movement showing a variety of techniques (timpani, snare); mallet skills and scales if appropriate.
Performance (melody and improvisation) of one or two tunes from the standard jazz repertoire in contrasting styles, such as a medium or medium up-tempo12-bar jazz blues or standard jazz tune and/or a standard ballad
- Drummers demonstrate both solo and accompaniment contrasting styles
- Pianists & Guitar also demonstrate comping in various styles
(Playback CDs to accompany jazz auditions are fine)
A student should be prepared to demonstrate sufficient skill on the instrument to merit placement in a college-level performance ensemble. Students who audition for music scholarships and who plan to major in music at Santa Rosa Junior College will also be considered for admission into MUSCP 40.1 - 7 Applied Music.
