Traditional Zuni pottery is characterized by the olla shape (a short necked jar) with polychrome decorations in red and black on a white slip. The designs include geometric patterns, flowers, birds, and the deer with heartline motif. Other favorite Zuni designs include frogs, tadpoles, and butterflies, all symbols related to the need for rain and water. Most often the designs are arranged in four quadrants about the vessel's walls. Below are some examples of fine old Zuni pieces. A classic olla is illustrated by the vessel on the far left. Its walls are divided into four decorative zones and feature the popular floral medallion design, stylized red birds, and various geometric forms. The old bowl, seen in the middle, is a little unusual in that the interior design is divided into three parts, not four. The third piece on the far right, with an appliqued frog and painted tadpole design, is a form usually called a prayer meal bowl.
