The core of MESA’s academic support services is the program’s team of dedicated peer tutors. Student peer tutors are often the first point of contact for new MESA members and bring to their work a balanced responsibility to assist students as a peer mentor, class tutor, and resource guide. MESA peer tutors are trained by MESA staff and work in collaboration with the faculty and staff in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics departments.
MESA peer tutors work as SRJC student employees under the direction of the MESA Program Coordinator. MESA students are encouraged to apply their expanding content knowledge and leadership skills to becoming a peer tutor. The experience is especially rewarding to tutors and students alike because the collaboration not only strengthens academic skills, but MESA and new college friendships.
Each semester new tutoring positions open in MESA, and MESA students are given first hiring consideration, since they are involved and know the program. All tutorial services take place in the MESA Center, are open to all SRJC students, and are free.
MEET MESA TUTORS
Abraham
Major: Physics with a minor in Math
Educational Goal: Transfer to a UC university, either Berkeley or Santa Cruz
Since the age of 4 or 5, I’ve been interested in astronomy and science. As a child I would look to the night sky searching for answers to satisfy my curiosity. Unfortunately, I did not have expensive equipment to look deeply into the dark abyss plagued with mystery. All I had were my two little feet to stand on, my own two eyes to take in the universe and a strong neck to keep my sights on the heavens. I understand now that answers can come from anywhere and as a MESA tutor I hope I can be a source of help for you. I look forward to struggling on tough questions with you!

Engineering (Materials)
Educational Goal: Transfer to Cal Poly or San Diego State
Obtain my BS from UC Davis, my MS from Davis or M.I.T., and a MBA
My dad is an engineer and my brother is going into engineering so here I am! I am interested in superconductors and I want to transfer to UC Davis and obtain a BS while assisting in a research lab. I hope to do actual lab research during graduate school and then work at an engineering company.

Major: Physics
Educational Goal: Transfer as a physics major

Major: Mechanical Engineering
Educational Goal: Transfer to UC Berkeley, UC Davis, or Cal Poly, SLO
Math and science are the ‘means to an end’ of taking things apart, modifying them, improving them, and putting them back together. I look forward to transferring to UC Berkeley or UC Davis in fall 2010 as a mechanical engineering major. By acquiring a degree from either of these fine institutions, I hope to be able to financially support my biggest hobby – breaking and (on occasion) fixing things. MESA is a great place. Come on over and check us out.

Major: Civil Engineering
Educational Goal: Transfer to Cal Poly, SLO
I have always enjoyed math and problem-solving and wanted an interesting and challenging career. Civil engineering seems to be a perfect fit. I’m planning to transfer to Cal Poly SLO in fall 2010 and obtain my bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. After that, I hope to settle into a great job and enjoy a rewarding and challenging career as a civil engineer. Ultimately, I want to become a Professional Engineer (P.E.) and have a firm of my own.

Major: Mechanical Engineering
Educational Goal: Transfer to UC Berkeley
I’ve always liked fixing things and I love seeing physics and math used in real-world applications. Ever since I was young, I’ve been fascinated with machines and how they work. This is why I’m studying mechanical engineering. I like using physics and math to solve real problems. Feel free to visit me in the MESA center for help in math, physics or engineering.
Ibrahim
Major: Biomedical Engineering
Educational Goal: Transfer to a four-year university
I attended a lecture a few years ago about how biomedical engineering is revolutionizing the medical field and have been fascinated with it ever since. When I learned that I could take my skills in math and science and use them to help others, I was sold. My goal is to pursue this field and earn a PhD. I hope to transfer in fall 2010, but until then, come find me in the MESA center. I’ll be glad to help you with your questions!
Keith
Major: Mechatronics
Educational Goal: Transfer to CSU, Chico and obtain a Bachelor’s in Mechatronics with a minor in Manufacturing
I have always enjoyed math and science. As I advanced in my academic career, I found them as a means to an end, not the end. This and my love of computers and technology, made me want to become a mechatronics engineer. Mechatronics is a cross between mechanical and computer engineering which pleases both my mechanical and computer sides. I want to transfer to Chico where I can acquire a Bachelor's in Mechatronics. I plan on using my mechanical and computer skills to make a Gundam. On a more practical note, I will also use my skills to make robots and mechanical suits for the elderly, disabled, and others in need. Come see me in the MESA center where I can help you with math, physics and my personal favorite, computer programming.

Major: Structural Engineering
Educational Goal: To transfer as an engineering major
