The core of MESA’s academic support services is the program’s team of dedicated peer tutors. Student peer tutors are often the first point of contact for new MESA members and bring to their work a balanced responsibility to assist students as a peer mentor, class tutor, and resource guide. MESA peer tutors are trained by MESA staff and work in collaboration with the faculty and staff in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics departments.
MESA peer tutors work as SRJC student employees under the direction of the MESA Program Coordinator. MESA students are encouraged to apply their expanding content knowledge and leadership skills to becoming a peer tutor. The experience is especially rewarding to tutors and students alike because the collaboration not only strengthens academic skills, but MESA and new college friendships.
Each semester new tutoring positions open in MESA, and MESA students are given first hiring consideration, since they are involved and know the program. All tutorial services take place in the MESA Center, are open to all SRJC students, and are free.

Major: Mechanical Engineering
Educational Goal: Transfer to Cal Poly, SLO
I’ve always been fascinated about how machines work; I enjoyed using my creativity to make and solve things on my own. I plan to transfer to Cal Poly SLO in fall 2011 and obtain a bachelor’s and master’s degree. Come see me in the MESA Center where I will try to help you with your physics, math, and chemistry homework.
Alexandra
Major: Civil Engineering
Educational Goal: Transfer to a school to learn more about civil engineering and its application in “green building”
I would love to use my interests in math and science to make the world more beautiful and to create synergy between nature and man-made spaces. I am transferring in fall 2011 and am hoping to go to a school that balances theoretical and hands-on approaches. I would like to specialize in civil engineering with a “green building” theme. I am amazed by how engineers are mimicking biology to revolutionize structures. I am a chemistry and math whiz; come see me and let me help you as you go for your goals!
Coral
Major: Applied Mathematics
Educational Goal: Transfer to UC Berkeley and get a BS in applied mathematics
I hope to transfer to UC Berkeley and obtain a degree in Applied Mathematics. I then plan to get a master’s degree in mathematical modeling in environmental science from Humboldt State University. I love the challenge that math presents for my mind and I hope to be challenged in a similar way in my career. Come see me in the MESA Center for help in math, chemistry, and physics.
James
Major: Aerospace Engineering
Educational Goal: To pursue a master’s degree in aerospace engineering
I would like to transfer to UC Davis and obtain my master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering. I hope to one day work on something that will go into space and to try and engineer something ground breaking. Come find me in MESA for help in math, physics, engineering and chemistry.
Linda
Major: Mechanical Engineering
Educational Goal: Transfer to Cal Poly, SLO to get MS in mechanical engineering
I hope to transfer to Cal Poly SLO to get a master’s degree in mechanical engineering. I like all the different and interesting jobs mechanical engineers undertake. My interest lies in helping the environment. Come to MESA for homework help.
Melissa
Major: Civil Engineering
Educational Goal: Transfer to Cal Poly, SLO
I have always loved math and known I wanted to be in a math related career. I’ve also enjoyed physics and autoCad classes. I hope to transfer to Cal Poly SLO and obtain my master’s degree in civil engineering with a concentration in structural engineering. Come see me in the MESA Center for help in math and physics.
Rosa
Major: Environmental Science
Educational Goal: Transfer to UC Davis
I have always enjoyed math and science, but I had the hardest time finding a major. This is my third year at the JC and I changed my major about 10 times before I realized that environmental science was a perfect major for me. For fall 2011, I plan to transfer to UC Davis and obtain a BA in Environmental Science. I want a master’s degree in something, but I don’t know what yet. I hope to one day find solutions to repair the earth from the damage it has taken and to find ways to make human processes more eco-friendly. For now, I’ll help others. Come see me if you would like help in math, chemistry, biology, or just to say hi.
Elias
Major: Mathematics
Educational Goal: Transfer to a UC school to earn a BS in Mathematics
When I was younger, math wasn’t my best subject. When I was introduced to MESA in high school through Mr. Ramirez, I started looking at all of the things math was a gateway to … such as engineering, chemistry, biology and physics. I was sold! Math became my best subject and here I am. Since math is the base of most science majors, I want to be the person to get more people interested in math and science. This is what motivates me to want to be a math teacher. Come by MESA; I will be more than happy to help with questions.
