For more than 30 years MESA has partnered with education and industry to meet California's need for qualified engineers, scientists, and computer scientists. MESA relies on industry to provide guidance to faculty and students, to act as career role models and mentors, and to advance MESA's overall objective---to increase the number of graduates earning a Bachelor of Science degree in math or science-based disciplines.

The partnership of MESA, industry, and education leads to impressive results, for example:

  • * Of MESA community college students who go on to four-year institutions,

    • 38% transferred to the University of California
    • 48% transferred to a California State University
    • 9% transferred to an Independence California College

  • * Of MESA community college students who transferred

    • 100% are math-based majors
    • One year after transferring, 90% of these students were persisting in these majors

  • * Industry Needs MESA Grads

The California Council on Science and Technology, the U.S. Department of Labor and other groups have raised urgent concern about the shortage of engineers and scientists.  The 2004-2005 statistics below quantify the problem and show how MESA contributes to the solutions.

    •  In 2001, some 14, 000 California jobs requiring science and engineering degrees when unfilled, threatening California’s ability to compete in the global economy.

    •  Job requiring science, engineering and technical training will increase 51% nationally through 2008, leading to 6 million potential job openings in these related fields.

    • Fewer than 20,000 science and engineering graduates are produced annually.  To make up for the shortfall, the number produced in the state would need to increase by nearly 70%.

    •  In 2005, SRJC ranked second among the California MESA Community Colleges for transferring the highest number of students to four-year institutions.  Of that cohort, 92% persisted in math, engineering and science majors.

MESA has been recognized by the White House, the Ford Foundations and Harvard University for its innovation and mentoring success in engineering, science and mathematics.
