MESA Events

Research poster Project
Each Spring, MESA partners with the STEM departments to host an undergraduate research poster project. For the one-unit independent study project, each student selects a science-based research topic, designs a research plan in collaboration with a STEM faculty member, and produces a culminating project --- a research poster. Each poster is 36" by 48" in size and is unique to each student's focus of study. Students present their research topic and poster during MESA's May recognition Banquet.

Field Trips and Career Development

During the school year, field trips are scheduled to various transfer universities, research facilities and science/technology centers. The trips, typically scheduled for Fridays, are designed to help MESA students gain greater insight into their career choices and related transfer institutions. The trips are coordinated to complement Transfer Center field trips. For the 2003-2004 school year, trips to UC Davis and Cal Poly, SLO are being planned. Check your e-mail for updates.

Summer Science and Math Institute

This program, co-sponsored with Sonoma State University's AMP program, is offered each year to new and continuing students. For three weeks, students participate in science field research at Pt. Arena and complete academic preparation for pre-calculus and calculus. Past participants rave about their experience at Pt. Arena and recognize the benefit of preliminary work in calculus.

Each spring Santa Rosa Junior College's MESA program hosts a day filled with hands-on competition for students participating in the MESA High School Program at Windsor and Healdsburg High School. Pre-MESA Day allows high school students to test their skills in mathematical problem solving, building balsa wood bridges, flying gliders, dropping eggs from tall buildings, and more. SRJC MESA students and staff support the Pre-MESA Day activities by serving as competition judges and hosts. The local winners from Pre-MESA Day advance to the statewide competition.

Engineering Shadow Day

What event brings together Santa Rosa Junior College engineering students and over 27 professional engineers from Advanced Fiber Communications, Agilent Technologies, Medtronic, JDS Uniphase, Sonoma Design Group, General Dynamics, Brelje and Race Consulting Civil Engineers, Carlenzoli and Associates, The City of Santa Rosa – Public Works, Coastland Civil Engineering, Kleinfelder and ZFA Structural Engineers? Engineering Shadow Day, an event co-sponsored by the Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) program and the Engineering and Physics Department, brought together the academics and applications of engineering.

On Friday, November 5, 2004 sixty-six engineers and engineering students met during a get-acquainted luncheon. For Engineering Shadow Day, each SRJC student was paired with a working engineering and given the framework and opportunity to leverage that meeting into a job site visit and mentoring relationship. Student tailored workplace visits are completed during the week of November 8^th.

The Engineering Shadow Day event is in its fifth year of existence. MESA and the Engineering and Physic Department are most grateful to the local companies that support this student-based career development activity. To all the students and professionals who participated and will continue their mentoring relationship, Darci Rosales and Vince Bertsch extend a genuine thank you.

21^st Annual Engineering and Science Student Conference

On Friday, October 1, 2004 over 150 high school students, community college students, SRJC staff, and northern California MESA program directors converged on the Santa Rosa Junior College campus, in order to glean first-hand information on engineering and science programs at major college campuses.

Co-sponsored by the SRJC MESA Program and the Department of Engineering and Physics, the conference was designed to supplement “Transfer Day” by providing engineering and science transfer students direct contact with instructional Deans and faculty members from schools supporting these majors. Participating four-year universities and colleges included: University of California, Berkeley, Davis, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz and California State University, Chico, San Jose State, Sonoma, Sacramento, San Francisco, and San Luis Obispo.

The conference was staged in the Doyle Student Lounge, and admission was free.

Annual Agilent-MESA Robotics Competition

Each spring, beginning in 2004, Agilent Technologies of Santa Rosa partners with the MESA program to host a robotics competition. MESA works closely with industry sponsors to inspire students that are underrepresented in today’s growing technical world. The Agilent-MESA Robotics Competition is one illustration of how Agilent Technologies works in the community to increase awareness of the opportunities and rewards of a technical career.
