The Hand of Man

Hikers at Young Lakes

What is traditionally considered a true nature photograph, is an image that excludes any evidence of people or any form of human endeavor. Above is a beautiful photograph of a Sub-alpine Forest around an oligotrophic lake at nearly 10,000 feet elevation in Yosemite National Park. A striking photo but cannot be considered a nature image because people are evident. Other problems seen in this photo include the strong contrasts of shadows and background mountain peaks, and the lack of detail in the Sub-alpine Forest that surrounds the lake.
Lake at Tioga Pass, Yosemite National Park

By contrast, this photo is a pristine Sub-alpine Forest and high sierran lake with nothing evident that suggests the presence of people. There is nothing wrong with photographs including people, it simply cannot be considered nature photography if people or their artifacts are present in the image.
