One very distracting mistake often made is the clipping of some body part, such as the tail in this photograph, where it was obviously left out unintentionally. Either the entire body should be included in the photograph, or there should be an obvious cropping of the view showing only selected parts. Note also that the body, and particularly the head is not in clear focus. The camera was probably hand held and/or the bird moved at the time the photograph was taken. Bird photography is always a challange.
Note that the salamander above is entirely within the photograph. None of the body parts are clipped. Note also that all parts of the salamander's body are in sharp focus, and the animal has a very alert pose.
In this photograph of the rattlesnake, parts of the body have been clipped with a definite purpose and a pleasing result. The tongue can easily be seen except for the base of the tongue is obscured by the shadow of the head. That part of the tongue could have been illuminated with a second strobe, but in photographing such a venomous animal, sometimes those options are not always available.
