Library Skills Program

This program will help you become familiar with the library and will introduce you to basic library research tools. Each self-paced exercise takes about 20 MINUTES. You may do as many exercises as you wish, as often as you wish. To get the exercises, click the links below to print your own copy.

NOTE: You will need the free Adobe Reader software to read these exercises. You can download a copy of the Adobe Reader software for your type of computer on the Adobe website.

  • The LIBRARY AUDIO TOUR will introduce you to the physical layout of the library buildings, and to the libraries' hours, services and checkout policies. To get the Doyle Library ipod tour and headphones, take your photo student ID card to the Periodicals Desk on the second floor in the Doyle Library (Santa Rosa).

  • The LIBRARY CATALOG exercise will help you learn to use the library's online catalog to find a book. The library catalog can be searched from anywhere you have access to the Internet, whether on or off campus.

  • FINDING MAGAZINE ARTICLES will help you search for magazine and newspaper articles on particular topics using the library's online databases. You will also locate an article in a magazine held in one of the SRJC libraries.

  • The ENCYCLOPEDIAS exercise will help you learn to use general encyclopedias like World Book and Britannica as well as special subject encyclopedias like the Encyclopedia of World Art for background information on a topic.

  • The INTERNET/WORLD WIDE WEB exercise will introduce you to very basic techniques for using a web browser and for using World Wide Web search engines to find information on a specific topic.
