Library Director Will Baty Honored as SRJC Employee of the MonthWe heartily congratulate Will Baty, SRJC Dean of Learning Resources and Educational Technology, on being named November SRJC "Employee of the Month." Will was honored at the November 14 meeting of the SRJC Board of Trustees, in recognition of his many years of valuable contributions to the College's instructional programs, not the least of which is his work on the magnificent new Doyle Library building on the Santa Rosa campus. Will began working at SRJC in the 1970s as an adjunct librarian in the old Plover Library. Over the next 36 years, Will worked as a reference librarian, an active faculty participant in the Academic Senate and the College's committee life, Director of Library and Media Services and eventually Dean of Learning Resources and Educational Technology, overseeing the SRJC Library, Media Services and Academic Computing departments for both campuses. In their descriptions of Will and his value to the College and its community, speakers commended him for his vision, his superior management and leadership skills, the high standards he sets for himself and for others, his persistence and attention to detail even under conditions where others might succumb to overload and stress, his ability to budget even in years of scarcity, his enthusiasm, sense of humor and his support of his staff.
At the end of the Board meeting, Library staff member Cathleen Cummings presented Will with a piece of "art" assembled with a contributed item from each Library, Media Services and Academic Computing staff member. Read more about Will on page 2 of the November 17, 2006 Insider staff newsletter. Congratulations, Will! |

Captain Meriwether Lewis and Lieutenant William Clark, American explorers of the early 1800s, made a multi-year journey into completely uncharted territory of the American West. Their expedition through the Louisiana Purchase and the Pacific Northwest was such a major chapter in the history of American exploration that historian Gary Moulton has called it "our epic of exploration." (For brief introductions to their expedition, check out Lewis and Clark (PBS) , National Geographic: Lewis & Clark or Discovering Lewis & Clark.)
On Friday, November 3 at 7:00 P.M. in Emeritus Hall's Newman Auditorium (Santa Rosa campus), Dr. Gary E. Moulton, leading Lewis and Clark scholar, will give the first lecture in the new Doyle Library Lecture Series, titled "Lewis and Clark's New Look." Dr. Moulton is the Sorensen Professor of History, Emeritus at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, and also the editor of the 13-volume Journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, considered the most accurate and thorough version of the Lewis and Clark journals ever published. (Read and watch a University of Nebraska interview with Dr. Moulton about Lewis and Clark and about the editing of the expedition's journals.)
This lecture is underwritten by Nelson Weller, member of the SRJC Foundation's Board of Directors. Mr. Weller, who has extensively explored the Lewis and Clark trails himself, has generously donated a collection of works about Lewis and Clark to the new Doyle Library.
A reception in the Doyle Library's fourth-floor reading room will immediately follow the lecture.

Printing and photocopying in the SRJC libraries costs 10 cents per sheet of paper. To print from SRJC Library computers, you'll need to buy a new "print card" this year.(The old cards will not work with the new system.)
In the Doyle Library, 1) Go to the Print & Copy Center on the second or the fourth floor, 2) Buy your print card from the vending machine there (Cards cost $1.00), then 3) put the card back into the same vending machine and put some money on the card so that you can make prints and photocopies. When your card runs out of money, simply put more money on the same card.
Your card will also work in the Doyle Library photocopiers, located in the Print & Copy Centers on each floor.
At the present time, the Mahoney Library still uses the old print system (15 cents per sheet of paper), but they will be switching to the new system soon.

The expansion of the Petaluma campus is now underway. It will increase the capacity of the very active Mahoney Library by five times.

The Rounce and Coffin Club of Los Angeles is a group of printers, librarians, booksellers and book collectors. Each year, the Club invites book publishers in the Western United States to submit examples of their finest books for possible inclusion in the Western Books Exhibition. Judges consider questions such as whether the design of a book complements the subject matter and the purposes for which the book will be used. Each book's size, shape, paper, margins, binding, typography, graphic attributes and other design features are examined. The resulting exhibit is a celebration of the physical book, showcasing 36 works from fine press printers and book artists.
On display in the Plover Library on SRJC's Santa Rosa campus through Wednesday, May 10.
