Internet Resources

Some Starting Points

Millions of documents, images and information databases can be found and used via the Internet. Unfortunately, there isn't one big index which organizes all these resources the way a library catalog or telephone directory would. But some Internet tools now help you search for information by topic.

Search Engines - Search for a word or phrase.
Subject Directories - Browse a list of topics.
SRJC Library Internet Reference Collection - Explore some sites we use often.

Search Engines

These allow you to search for information on other Internet computers by typing one or more important words related to your topic.

Today, anyone can put "information" on the Internet. Some of the resources you find will be scholarly and authoritative; others will simply be comments or messages posted by another Internet user like yourself. Remember to notice where information came from when you evaluate its usefulness.

Try your topic in a couple of the following popular search engines. (Click on the name of a search engine below, then put the cursor in the box provided, type one or two words in your topic, and press the Return/Enter key.)

Subject Directories

Some libraries and other organizations have compiled large lists of Internet resources, organized by broad subject categories. These lists are usually called "subject directories." Explore some of these excellent subject directories.
