The author has spent the last several years researching urban agriculture in Cuba, including field work at many sustainable farms on the island. He tells the story of why and how Cuba was able to turn to urban food production on a large scale with minimal use of chemicals, petroleum, and machinery, and of the successes it achieved—along with the continuing difficulties it still faces in reducing its need for food imports.

This history of Cuba and its music begins with the collision of Spain and Africa and continues through the era of Miguelito Valdes, Arsenio Rodríguez, Benny More, and Perez Prado. It offers a behind-the-scenes examination of music from a Cuban point of view, unearthing surprising, provocative connections and making a case for Cuba as fundamental to the evolution of music in the New World.

This book contains a collection of critical essays that explain the Afro-Cuban contemporary experience. Race and culture interact in Cuba in a manner that is distinctive yet which also illuminates the structures of power. The book presents the insights of black Cubans who have a deep belief in the Cuban Revolution but who at the same time identify with the integrity of the black Cuban people. They seek a path for constructing a national identity that transcends the contradictions of racial stereotyping and cultural assimilation.

The author presents a concise portrait of the small island nation's unique place on the world stage over the past fifty years. Following a scene-setting introduction that describes the dynamics unleashed since 2006 when Fidel Castro transferred provisional power to his brother Raul, the book looks backward toward Cuba's history since the Spanish American War before shifting to more recent times.

Victimized by a government that banned his books and jailed him for a crime he didn't commit, poet Reinaldo Arenas endured unspeakable persecution in a courageous stand against censorship and oppression. Without a country, but not without integrity, he fled to America where he continued to fight for personal expression and produced a stirring body of work.
