Library Behavior

All library users are expected to behave in a manner that respects the library buildings & equipment, the Library staff and other library users. This includes lowering your voice when entering the buildings, using Group Study rooms for group projects and conversations, as well as helping to keep the library facilities in good condition for the benefit of all library users. Please put paper and trash in the appropriate wastebaskets and recycling baskets before you leave your table or study room in the library, and leave the area clean for other library users.

Cell Phones in the Libraries

No ringing; no talking.
In order to preserve an atmosphere in which all library users can do research and study undisturbed, cell phone calls are not permitted in the SRJC libraries except in the Doyle Library café, restrooms or group study rooms. You may not make or receive phone calls in the reading rooms and lobby areas. Upon entering either of the libraries, please set your phone's ringer to "vibrate only" (i.e. turn off the ringer's tone) so that the ring cannot be heard by other library users.

Use of Library Computers

Library computers are provided for uses which support education and learning at SRJC. This includes doing research for class work, preparing and printing class papers, reports and projects, using class web pages and discussion forums, e-mailing instructors and other class members, and related activities.

The following uses are prohibited:

  • Use of library computers for business or commercial use.
  • Tampering with computer settings or otherwise trying to compromise the College computers or networks or any remote computers or networks.

For more details, see the SRJC Acceptable Use Policy for Instructional Computers.

Children in the Libraries

The library buildings are visited by many varied members of the general public. For their own safety, children may never be left unattended in the College libraries, and they must be "under the continuous supervision of the adult responsible for them." (See SRJC Board Policy 7.16 concerning children on campus.) Library staff members are not able to supervise children or monitor their Internet viewing while parents are in class or studying elsewhere in the library buildings.

Borrowing Privileges

The SRJC Library collections primarily support the educational process at the College. Current SRJC students, faculty and staff members may borrow books from the Library collections, with a currently validated SRJC ID card. Community members are welcome to use the Library's print collections inside the Doyle and Mahoney library buildings. SRJC students, faculty and staff may also check out laptop computers for in-library use with a currently validated SRJC ID card.

Through a reciprocal borrowing agreement with the Sonoma State University Library, SRJC students who are unable to find a book they need in either of the SRJC libraries may also obtain a free one-semester courtesy borrower card for the Sonoma State University Library by presenting proof of current SRJC registration to the Sonoma State University Library Circulation Desk staff. (If you're unable to find what you need in the SRJC libraries, please be sure to ask the SRJC reference librarians for help first to be sure you have exhausted the resources of the SRJC Library collections.)

Other options for community members: The Sonoma County public library serves all members of Sonoma County; it lends books, offers online databases and provides library services to any County resident with a Sonoma County Library card. In addition, community members may purchase a Sonoma State University Library community borrower card at Sonoma State University which will allow limited use of the Sonoma State University Library collections. The charge is currently $10 for three months.
