Community Involvement enables students to contribute to their community, pursue their educational experience beyond the classroom, and further their academic goals on a VOLUNTARY basis in nonprofit agencies, the public sector, nonprofit hospitals, or educational institutions. (Examples: tutoring, reading for the blind, or serving as aides in classrooms or health facilities.) The students must be registered with Santa Rosa Junior College. This is a graded course; however, you can choose to take it for CR/NC.

You may earn a maximum of three units each semester. A a total of six units is allowed toward an A.A. or A.S. degree from any community college in California.

REGISTRATION

Students must develop objectives with the community agency representative and obtain approval from the Community Involvement instructor. Forms are available in the Work Experience office and must be returned to the Community Involvement instructor before a registering.

1. Pick up Information/Objectives Form in Work Experience office.
2. With the help of your supervisor, write two to four objectives identifying learning at the volunteer site. If you need assistance, please make an appointment with the Community InvolvementI instructor.
3. Turn in signed Objectives Form as soon as possible to the Community Involvement instructor and then register for the course.
4. Write a Student Evaluation paper at the end of the semester. Discuss what you learned, the experiences you had, the value of the volunteer position, and how it will help your career or personal growth. It should be two to three typed pages and demonstrate critcal thinking by you. See instructor for further information.
5. The volunteer site supervisor must verify and sign the Objectives Form (yellow or pink copy) to verify hours worked and objectives completed. Return the form to the Community Involvement instructor prior to final exams. (Health Occupation students must also complete a seperate time sheet.)
