MEET THE NEWEST MEMBER
OF THE AG/NR FACULTY

Merilark Padgett-Johnson is the new full-time Viticulture Program Coordinator and instructor. She received her B.S. (Plant Science), M.S.(Horticulture) and Ph.D.(Plant Biology) from UC Davis. After managing vineyards and acting as a consulting viticulturist for several years, she began teaching at Allan Hancock College in Santa Barbara County. She developed the Viticulture and Enology Program through teaching, writing curriculum and hiring faculty members from the winegrape industry. She is a member of the Sonoma County Grape Growers’ Association, the Russian River Valley Winegrowers’ Association, the American Society for Enology and Viticulture, and the Australian Society for Viticulture and Oenology.

MAJOR DONATIONS TO AG PAVILION

  • The Sonoma County Wineries Association, Sonoma County Wineries Foundation, and the Sonoma County Grape Growers Association have accepted the naming of the Sonoma County Wineries and Grape Growers Association Conference and Learning Center located in the Warren G. Dutton Jr. Agriculture Pavilion at SRJC's Shone Farm with a donation of $200,000.

  • A $150,000 contribution gives the Gallo family naming rights to the winemaking facility in the Warren G. Dutton Jr. Agriculture Pavilion at SRJC's Shone Farm. The contribution has been used to purchase tanks and other equipment for the instructional winery. The instructional winemaking facility is being used for all wine studies laboratory classes. Matt Gallo, a third generation member of the Gallo family who oversees Gallo of Sonoma operations, said the donation reflects his late grandfather Julio Gallo's deep respect for the land and love for Sonoma County as a grape-growing region. "We hope our contribution to the Santa Rosa Junior College Shone Farm will encourage more young people to search for a new meaning in their relationship with the land and to find an understanding of how science supports a shared vision of a sustainable future," Gallo said.

  • The Merlo family has generously funded the new Merlo Culinary Center and Joe Vercelli Kitchen in the Warren G. Dutton Jr., Agricultural Pavilion at Shone Farm. This center is a multi-purpose facility incorporating food processing, vegetable/fruit packaging, culinary, meats, and other food related courses. The professional kitchen will be used for special activities and fundraisers in conjunction with the other facilities in the Warren G. Dutton Jr., Agricultural Pavilion.

2005 AGSTRAVAGANZA SUCCESSFUL!
"The SRJC Foundation Ag Trust's 2005 Agstravaganza at Richard's Grove and Saralee's Vineyard on June 11th netted approximately a half million dollars," reports Bob Fraser, Department Chair of the Agriculture/Natural Resources Department.  The day into evening event featured a variety of SRJC agriculture demonstrations, a silent auction and a fabulous live auction, music and entertainment, and a program honoring Rich and Saralee Kunde.  Couple with generous gifts, the Ag Trust is nearly at their goal of raising $1 million of the Warren G. Dutton Jr. Agriculture Pavilion.
