PRIORITY FILING DEADLINE

Thursday, December 3, 2009
(Open until filled.)

Applications will be accepted for this adjunct faculty pool for a period of one year from the filing priority deadline date. If the department has an immediate need to add candidates to their pool, they will review applications received by the priority deadline date. All applications received after the priority deadline will remain on file for the next review by the department. If the department does not have an immediate need to add candidates to their pool, all applications will remain on file until the need arises. If selected for an interview, candidates will be invited to meet with a committee. If selected for the pool, candidates remain in the pool for a period of two years.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Disability Resources Department of Santa Rosa Junior College is accepting applications for a pool of qualified candidates with demonstrated instructional skills to join an outstanding team of faculty and administrators to provide high quality programs and services to our district, our community, and most importantly to our students. Teaching assignments may be temporary, part-time and/or on-call and may be immediate or as needed (as specified in Education Code Section 87482.5).

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION

Nearly 100 staff and faculty in the Disability Resources Department provide a rich combination of instruction and support services to over 3,000 students with disabilities at Santa Rosa Junior College.

ADJUNCT POOL DESCRIPTION

We are accepting applications for instructors for inclusion in a pool who have the ability to teach in one or more of the following areas (there are no anticipated needs for 09/10):

Assignments could involve full or partial assignment at any of the District's sites or off-campus locations, and could involve any combination of day or evening classes, with office hours being mandatory. Adjunct faculty are responsible for maintaining currency in their field(s) of expertise. All faculty are encouraged to participate in updating existing courses (including courses that serve community needs, such as short, non-credit, or on-line courses); assisting in the assessment of student learning outcomes; participating in departmental activities and other college service such as committee work; and participating in community outreach on behalf of the college.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required for Adapted Physical Education: Master’s Degree in Physical Education, Exercise Science, Education with an emphasis in Physical Education, Kinesiology, Physiology of Exercise, or Adaptive Physical Education; OR Bachelor’s degree in any of the above AND Master’s Degree in any Life Science, Dance, Physiology, Health Education, Recreation Administration, or Physical Therapy; AND fifteen (15) semester units of upper division or graduate study in Adapted Physical Education; OR the equivalent; OR a fully satisfied (Life) California Community College Credential in Disabled Students Programs and Services in Adaptive Physical Education.

Required for Assistive Technology Specialist:
CREDIT COURSES:
Candidates must be qualified in either categories 1) and 2) or 3) or 4) below.

  1. Possession of a Master's degree, or equivalent foreign degree, in the category of Disability, Special Education, Education, Psychology, Educational Psychology, or Rehabilitation Counseling; and
  2. Fifteen semester units of upper division or graduate study in the area of disability, to include, but not be limited to:

      (a) Learning disabilities;

      (b) Developmental disabilities;

      (c) Deaf and hearing impaired;

      (d) Physical disabilities; or

      (e) Adapted computer technology;

  3. OR the equivalent;
  4. OR a fully satisfied (Life) California Community College Instructor's Credential in Disability Resources.

NON-CREDIT COURSES: Candidates must be qualified in one or more of the following categories:

  1. The minimum qualifications for providing credit specialized instruction for students with disabilities as specified in the section above.
  2. A Bachelor's degree with any of the following majors: Education of Students with Specific or Multiple Disabilities; Special Education; Psychology; Physical Education with an emphasis in adaptive Physical Education; Communicative Disorders; Rehabilitation; Computer-based Education; other computer-related majors which include course work on adapted or assistive computer technology for students with disabilities; other majors related to providing specialized instruction or services to persons with disabilities.

    Required for Disability Specialist(DSPS Counselor):

    1. Master's Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling; OR
    2. Master's Degree in Special Education AND twenty-four or more semester units in upper division/graduate level course work in Counseling, Guidance, Student Personnel, Psychology or Social Work; OR
    3. Master's Degree in Counseling, Guidance, Student Personnel, Psychology, Career Development or Social Welfare AND either twelve or more semester units in upper division/graduate level course work specifically in Counseling or Rehabilitation of individuals with disabilities OR two years of full-time experience in one or more of the following areas:
      • Counseling or guidance for students with disabilities; OR
      • Counseling and/or guidance in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities of the position were predominantly or exclusively for persons with disabilities; OR
    4. Possession of a fully satisfied (Life) California Community College Counselor Credential authorizing services in Disabled Student Programs and Services; OR the equivalent.

    Preferred:

    • Experience counseling adults with a variety of disabilities, both physical and psychological.
    • Training and/or experience in academic counseling at the college level.
    • M.F.T. License.

    Required for Learning Disability Specialist: Master's degree or equivalent foreign degree in the category of Disability, Special Education, Education, Psychology, Educational Psychology, or Rehabilitation Counseling AND fifteen semester units of upper division or graduate study in the area of Learning Disabilities; OR the equivalent; OR a fully satisfied (Life) California Community College Credential in Disabled Student Programs and Services (Learning Disabilities).

    Required for Speech Language Specialist: Master's degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology OR Communication Disorders; AND licensure or eligibility for licensure as a speech pathologist or audiologist by the Medical Board of California; OR the equivalent; OR a fully satisfied (Life) California Community College Credential in Disabled Student Programs and Services (Speech/Language Disabilities.

    Preferred:

    • Previous experience working with adults with brain injuries or other communicative disabilities.
    • Possession of a Certificate of Clinical Competency from the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA).

    Required for all areas: Requires a sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

    Preferred for all areas: Bilingual ability (Spanish-English)

    If you do not possess the minimum qualifications, exactly as listed above, you must file for equivalency. If claiming equivalency, applicants are responsible for documenting all course work, degree programs and related professional experience at the time of application.

    In order to be given priority consideration for this position, applicants must submit AN ORIGINAL PLUS ONE COPY OF EACH of the following documents by the priority filing deadline:

    1. A completed Santa Rosa Junior College Faculty Application Form, Personal Data Form and Applicant Notification Form. Voluntary Data Form is optional.
      • If applicable, completed Equivalency Form and supporting documents.
    2. A brief statement describing your demonstrated experience in understanding and being sensitive to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff.
    3. A brief cover letter focusing on the required and preferred qualifications and explaining your interest in the pool (please specify which area(s) you are interested in being considered for).
    4. Current Resume
    5. Copies of transcripts of all college level course work (unofficial copies acceptable (both sides), but official transcripts must be submitted prior to hiring). If transcripts are from an institution outside of the United States, applicants must provide a formal evaluation of their foreign degree(s) at the time of application.     6. If applicable: a. Copy of California Community College Credential (both sides) in the following areas:
      • Disabled Students Programs and Services in Adaptive Physical Education
      • Disabled Student Programs and Services (Learning Disability Specialist and/or Speech Language Specialist)

The office is located in the Button Building on the college campus and is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Those applicants most suitably qualified for the position will be invited to appear for oral interviews before a Screening Committee. The Screening Committee may include representatives from the Faculty, the Administration, the Classified Staff, the Student Body, and the Board of Trustees.

Although Santa Rosa Junior College does not reimburse candidates for expenses related to the first interview, candidates traveling from out of the area for administrative or full-time faculty positions who are selected as finalists will be offered a travel stipend for their administrative interview(s).
