The American Sign Language (ASL) Department of Santa Rosa Junior College is seeking a pool of qualified candidates with demonstrated instructional skills to join an outstanding team of faculty and administrators to provide instruction in ASL, Deaf Culture, ASL-English Linguistics or Interpreter Education courses and to maintain high quality programs and services to our district, our community, and most importantly to our students. Teaching assignments may be temporary, part-time and/or on-call and may be immediate or as needed (as specified in Education Code Section 87482.5).
DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION
The American Sign Language Department offers courses in ASL, Deaf Culture and Interpreter Education and now has an ASL and ASL/English Interpreting major program. The department serves about 1,100 students each year. The Department is staffed with two full-time and thirteen adjunct instructors who teach classes at two campuses. Faculty use a "total immersion" teaching approach based on Vista College?s Signing Naturally curriculum. The Department has several new projects designed to enhance its high quality instructional program. Projects include: expanding the ASL and Deaf Studies curriculum and redesigning the curriculum to reflect a Student Learning Outcomes model. The Department also sponsors a number of social, cultural and community events and performances.
ADJUNCT POOL DESCRIPTION
We are seeking candidates for inclusion in a staffing pool of American Sign Language Instructors to teach in one or more of the following areas:
Assignments could involve full or partial assignment at any of the District's sites or off-campus locations, and could involve any combination of day or evening classes, with office hours being mandatory. Adjunct faculty are responsible for maintaining currency in their field(s) of expertise. All faculty are encouraged to participate in updating existing courses (including courses that serve community needs, such as short, non-credit, or on-line courses); assisting in the assessment of student learning outcomes; participating in departmental activities and other college service such as committee work; and participating in community outreach on behalf of the college.

Required: Bachelor's degree AND two years of full-time (or part-time equivalent) related experience; OR an Associate's degree AND six years of full-time (or part-time equivalent) related experience; OR the equivalent; OR a valid California Community College Instructor's Credential in Special Education (Sign Language). Requires a sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Although Santa Rosa Junior College does not reimburse candidates for expenses related to the first interview, candidates traveling from out of the area for administrative or full-time faculty positions who are selected as finalists will be offered a travel stipend for their administrative interview(s).
