PRIORITY FILING DEADLINE

*Applications are accepted for adjunct faculty pools for a period of one year from the filing priority deadline date. If the department has an immediate need to add candidates to their pool, they will review applications received by the priority deadline date. All applications received after the priority deadline will remain on file for the next review by the department, or for up to one year. If the department does not have an immediate need to add candidates to their pool, all applications will remain on file until the need arises, or for up to one year. If selected for interview, candidates will be invited to meet with a committee. If selected for the pool, candidates remain in the pool for a period of two years.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Chemistry Department of Santa Rosa Junior College is accepting applications for a pool of qualified candidates with demonstrated instructional skills to join an outstanding team of faculty and administrators to provide high quality programs and services to our district, our community, and most importantly to our students. Teaching assignments may be temporary, part-time and/or on-call and may be immediate or as needed (as specified in Education Code Section 87482.5).

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION

The Chemistry Department at Santa Rosa Junior College is staffed by seven full-time and several adjunct instructors who have great enthusiasm for teaching chemistry and sharing it with the community. The department has a Coordinator of Science Labs, Science Laboratory Instructional Assistant, as well as administrative support. Together we offer day and evening classes on the Santa Rosa and Petaluma campuses. The department places primary emphasis on quality undergraduate education and maintains high standards.On the Santa Rosa campus, the department houses an extensive network of computers with data acquisition interfaces which support and enhance classroom and laboratory instruction. A variety of modern instruments including a GC/Mass Spectrometer, a Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer, UV-Visible Spectrometers, a Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectrometer, and a Fast-Sequential Atomic Absorption Spectrometer are maintained for student use. The department has an extensive inventory of glassware and standard student laboratory equipment. We are committed to environmental sustainability through the use of micro scale equipment, source reduction, inventory control and just-in-time ordering. We are seeking a person who will join us as we continue our programs tradition of excellence.

ADJUNCT POOL DESCRIPTION

We are accepting applications for instructors for inclusion in a pool who are qualified to instruct in one or more of the following areas:

  • Chemistry for the Allied Health Sciences*
  • General Chemistry*
  • Introductory General Chemistry*

Assignments could involve full or partial assignment at any of the Districts sites or off-campus locations, and could involve any combination of day or evening classes with office hours being mandatory. Adjunct faculty are also responsible for maintaining currency in their field(s) of expertise. Optionally, adjunct faculty are encouraged to have some participation in updating existing courses (including courses that serve community needs, such as short, non-credit, or on-line courses); assisting in the assessment of student learning outcomes; participating in department activities and other college service such as committee work; and participating in community outreach on behalf of the college.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required: Master's Degree in Chemistry; OR Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or Biochemistry AND Master's Degree in Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Chemical Physics, Physics, Molecular Biology, or Geochemistry; OR possession of a fully satisfied (Life) California Community College Instructor's Credential in Chemistry; OR the equivalent.

Requires a sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Preferred:

  1. Advanced degree in physical, analytical, inorganic, organic or biochemistry.
  2. Experience in instrumental techniques.
  3. Commitment to the use of computer technology in the learning environment.
  4. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  5. Recent experience in teaching rigorous lecture and laboratory courses in General Chemistry and Chemistry for the Allied Health Science programs comparable to Santa Rosa Junior College's Chemistry 1A and 60.

  1. A completed Santa Rosa Junior College Faculty Application Form, Personal Data Form and Applicant Notification Form. Voluntary Data Form is optional.
    • If applicable, completed Equivalency Form and supporting documents.
  2. A brief statement describing your demonstrated experience in understanding and being sensitive to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff.
  3. A brief cover letter explaining your interest in the pool, including how you meet the requirements and are qualified to perform the duties as listed in the "Adjunct Pool Description" section of this announcement. Please specify which area(s) you are interested in being considered for.
  4. Current Resume.
  5. Copies of transcripts of all college level course work (unofficial copies acceptable (both sides), but official transcripts must be submitted prior to hiring). If transcripts are from an institution outside of the United States, applicants must provide a formal evaluation of their foreign degree(s) at the time of application.   6. Completed Supplemental Questionnaire (Please include sample syllabi and exams, if available (see Questions 3 and 5).
  7. References in verification of teaching excellence:
    • A copy of your college placement file (must be ordered by the applicant and received in Human Resources by the priority filing deadline); OR Three current letters of reference.
  8. If applicable, copy of California Community College Credential (both sides)

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

  • Starting Hourly Rate: Please see our hourly salary schedules online at www.santarosa.edu/hr/pages/salary.html or contact the Human Resources Department for more information.
  • For Unit A (AFA) Faculty, salary placement may be based on academic background, vocational experience, and teaching experience depending on discipline and as documented in application materials. Initial Step placement will be a Step 1 pending evaluation of experience as outlined in Article 27 of the AFA Contract.

  • Sick Leave Accrual: Adjunct faculty members accrue sick leave on a pro-rated basis.

The office is located in the Button Building on the college campus and is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Those applicants most suitably qualified for the position will be invited to appear for oral interviews before a Screening Committee. The Screening Committee may include representatives from the Faculty, the Administration, the Classified Staff, the Student Body, and the Board of Trustees.

Although Santa Rosa Junior College does not reimburse candidates for expenses related to the first interview, candidates traveling from out of the area for administrative or full-time faculty positions who are selected as finalists will be offered a travel stipend for their administrative interview(s).

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT (Prior to beginning employment):

  4. Must take a TB test (once hired and every four years thereafter).
