GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Santa Rosa Junior College is seeking a qualified Counselor to join an outstanding team of faculty, staff and instructional administrators to provide high quality programs and services to our district, our community, and most importantly, our students. This is a full-time, regular contract 50% Generalist/50% Puente position with an emphasis on working with students in the Puente Program at Santa Rosa Junior College, Petaluma Campus, beginning Fall Semester, August 2014. Appointments are contingent upon funding and Board approval.

Santa Rosa Junior Colleges Puente Project (Spanish for bridge) is a national award-winning program that has helped prepare thousands of students for success in university studies. The Puente Projects mission is to increase the number of educationally underserved students who enroll in four-year colleges and universities, earn college degrees, and return to the community as mentors and leaders to future generations.

One evening shift per week and additional duty in the summer, occasional Saturdays and evenings may be required. The 177 day mandatory work year may be on a flexible annual schedule in conformance with Board approved policy on counseling duties and hours.

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION

The Counseling Department provides academic counseling and advising to current and prospective students in gaining educational and career related information that assists each individual in achieving their immediate and long range academic and occupational goals. Counseling is an integral, complementary part of the instructional process that facilitates educational equity and retention. The Counseling Department participates in the educational experience by creating a climate that supports learning as well as self-understanding in order to promote effective decision-making and encourages students to develop personal responsibility in order to achieve their goals and aspirations benefiting themselves, the college and the community.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

Master's Degree in Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Guidance Counseling, Educational Counseling, Social Work or Career Development; OR a California License in Marriage, Family and Child Counseling (LMFCC); OR the equivalent; OR possession of a fully satisfied (Life) California Community College Credential in Counseling. Requires a sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

If you do not possess the minimum qualifications exactly as stated above, you must file for equivalency. If claiming equivalency, applicants are responsible for documenting all coursework, degree programs and related professional experience at time of application.

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated experience working with students in Puente or similar model.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse students who have a broad range of academic skills, language abilities, motivation and educational/occupational goals.
  • Demonstrated recent experience counseling and teaching college students at a community college or other college setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide counseling services and/or informational presentations to groups in varying sizes.
  • Demonstrated familiarity in the use of computer technology, social media and web-based technology as a teaching and counseling tool and ability to use this as a medium to offer counseling services.
  • Experience in counseling on crisis intervention, stress management, anger management, anxiety, or similar issues.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of California Community College matriculation requirements.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Student Success Act and the assessment of student learning outcomes.
  • Bilingual Ability (English/Spanish)

  2. A cover letter explaining your interest in the position, including how you meet the requirements and are qualified to perform the duties as listed in the Position Description section of this announcement.
  3. A statement describing your demonstrated experience in understanding and being sensitive to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff. Please note that the diversity statement for this recruitment must be submitted as a separate statement (rather than incorporating the statement within the cover letter).
  4. Current Resume.
  5. Copies of transcripts of all college level course work. Unofficial copies (both sides) are acceptable, but official transcripts must be submitted prior to hiring. If transcripts are from an institution outside of the United States, applicants must provide a formal evaluation of their foreign degree(s) at the time of application.   7. If applicable, copy of fully satisfied (Life) California Community College Credential in Counseling (both sides).

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

  • Starting Salary Range: $57,389 - $80,918 per year (2013/14 Faculty Salary Schedule). Teaching experience, other related professional experience, and academic degrees determine salary placement on a schedule that is competitive with other California Community Colleges.

  • Benefits: The District offers a competitive health and benefit package for employees and eligible dependents.

  • Leave/Holiday time: Full-time faculty members earn one day of sick leave for each month worked and are entitled to holidays recognized by the District that fall within the regular academic year.

The office is located in the Button Building on the college campus and is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT (Prior to beginning employment):
