Santa Rosa Junior College is seeking an individual with demonstrated instructional skills to join an outstanding team of faculty and instructional administrators to provide high quality programs and services to our district, our community, and most importantly, our students. This is a full-time, regular contract position in the Wine Studies program under the Agriculture/Natural Resources Department at Santa Rosa Junior College, beginning Fall Semester, August 2014. Appointments are contingent upon funding and Board approval.
The Agriculture Program at Santa Rosa Junior College is made up of seven full-time and over twenty five adjunct instructors teaching to over 2,500 students. This is the largest community college agriculture program in California, and has been recognized as the California Agriculture Teachers Association 2010 Outstanding Agriculture Community College Program. The instructional program comprises over fifteen diversified program areas serving the needs of vocational and transfer students, including the SRJC Shone Farm, consisting of over 365 acres of land, which offers learning by doing application in the various laboratories of the programs. Included in the farm operations are 80 acres of wine grapes, a bonded-winery, 17 acres sustainable agriculture vegetables and fruit, 100 acres of pasture for cow/calf, sheep and horse herds, 120 acres of timber, and 50 acres of multi-use land. The Richard L. Thomas classroom was constructed on the farm in 2002 and the Warren G. Dutton Ag Pavilion opened in 2007 to facilitate further growth in the Agriculture/Natural Resources Department at Santa Rosa Junior College.
SRJC offers courses at the Santa Rosa and Petaluma Campuses, at the Southwest Center, and in online formats as well. While the assignments are primarily for the campuses as noted above, please note that the District reserves the right of assignment to any location, and that assignments could involve any combination of day or evening classes with mandatory weekly Student Consultation Time. Instructors assume responsibility for maintaining currency in the field and for updating existing courses and developing new curricula; participating in the assessment of student learning outcomes; managing labs and Tutorial Centers; and participating in community outreach on behalf of the College.
Wine Studies faculty member will prepare students for employment in the wine industry through instruction and program development. As the program coordinator/instructor for this program, the Wine Studies faculty will:
Provide instruction in the area of wine studies that is current, relevant, and utilizes hands-on innovative instructional techniques and resources; Wine Studies program includes the following areas of focus: Enology, Wine Business and Marketing, Wine Evaluation and Service, and Wines and Vines (which focuses on the connection between winemakers and viticulture).
Teaching assignments may include, but are not limited to: Introduction to Enology, Lab Analysis of Wine, Wine Service and Hospitality, Wine Component Tasting, Professional Wine Judging, Winery Operations, Wine Sales and Distribution, Wine Marketing, courses on local/regional wines, California Wines, wines of other global regions, and courses on specific varietals such as Pinot noir and Zinfandel. Wine Studies classes are held on the Santa Rosa, Petaluma and Shone Farm campuses.
Develop curriculum for use in traditional lecture-lab formats, as well as day and evening specialty short courses; develop course and program level student learning outcomes (SLOs); conduct learning assessment projects; maintain office hours for student counseling including instruction and program related student contact.
Schedule Wine Studies courses in a manner that optimizes student enrollment and contribute to student success; effectively market the program for recruitment of appropriate students; serve as a knowledge resource for current students and performing outreach to potential students
Ensure instructional content articulates with relevant industry certification and towards 4-year degrees for transfer students to CSU and UC system.
Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; and effectively use appropriate technology and equipment.
The faculty member will be an active member of the Agricultural/Natural Resources Department and maintain a collegial relationship with peers; assist in Agriculture/Natural Resource Department planning, including and make recommendations regarding the acquisition of equipment and supplies; participate in the selection, supervision, evaluation and coordination of adjunct faculty and support staff.
Serve as liaison to Shone Farm management and staff with respect to courses scheduled at the farm and the interface between instruction, winery and farm operations.
Coordinate and cooperate with government regulatory agencies related to Shone Farm winery and its products.
Attend and participate in professional organizations, seminars and activities to promote the Wine Studies program; maintain currency with the current local, state, and national trends related to Wine Studies.
Develop contacts with industry groups and local employers. This includes coordinating and managing an industry-represented Wine Studies Advisory Committee that assists in maintaining and aligning the program content to match with employable knowledge and skills.
Be an active member of the wine industry community and an advocate for the SRJC Wine Program including attending industry meetings and maintaining currency in subject matter expertise.
Bachelor's degree AND two years of full-time (or part-time equivalent) related experience in field related to Wine Studies/Enology; OR an Associate's degree AND six years of full-time (or part-time equivalent) related experience in field related to Wine Studies/Enology; OR the equivalent; OR a fully satisfied (Life) California Community College Instructors Credential in Agricultural Services and Processing. Requires a sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Master's degree in a field or major related to Wine Studies or Enology
Prior college level teaching experience at a community college or university level
Knowledge of current trends in wine studies field and strategies for working with multicultural and re-entry students
Professional / community involvement in wine industry
Practical experience in wine industry
Expertise in enology and wine making

Provide a syllabus for a new Introductory Wine Studies/Enology course to be taught at Santa Rosa Junior College. The course should highlight the journey from grape to glass, touching on the art and science of wine making, wine chemistry, wine quality, wine business, marketing and sales.
The syllabus should include as assignment schedule that contains:
Week-by-week or day-by-day schedule including class meetings and topics covered;
Daily or weekly reading assignments;
Quiz and exam dates;
Due dates of other assignments such as reports, essays, or term papers; and
Field trips and/or guest lectures, if any.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Starting Salary Range:
$57,389 - $80,918 per year (2013/14 Faculty Salary Schedule). Teaching experience, other related professional experience, and academic degrees determine salary placement on a schedule that is competitive with other California Community Colleges.
The District offers a competitive health and benefit package for employees and eligible dependents.
Leave/Holiday time: Full-time faculty members earn one day of sick leave for each month worked and are entitled to holidays recognized by the District that fall within the regular academic year.
