GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Santa Rosa Junior College is seeking an individual with demonstrated instructional skills to join an outstanding team of faculty and instructional administrators to provide high quality services to our district, our community, and most importantly to our students in the Chemistry Department. This is a full-time, regular contract position, located at the Santa Rosa Campus beginning Fall Semester, August 2014. Appointment is contingent upon funding and Board approval.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Teaching responsibilities include approximately 20 hours per week of instruction, plus office hours for student counseling and contact. The instructors will be expected to assume responsibility for the following:

  • Teach all assigned chemistry courses, which may include any course offered by the department.
  • Remain current in the discipline and effective pedagogical techniques.
  • Participate in program development and review, curriculum design, student advisement, and district/college/department committees.
  • Collaborate with department colleagues.
  • Develop cooperative relationships with secondary schools, transfer institutions, community groups, and employers.

SRJC offers courses at the Santa Rosa and Petaluma Campuses, at the Southwest Center, and in online formats as well. While this assignment is primarily for the Santa Rosa Campus, please note that the District reserves the right of assignment to any location, and that assignments could involve any combination of day or evening classes with mandatory weekly Student Consultation Time. Instructors assume responsibility for maintaining currency in their field and for updating existing courses and developing new curricula; participating in the assessment of student learning outcomes; managing labs; and participating in community outreach on behalf of the College.

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION

The Chemistry Department at Santa Rosa Junior College is currently staffed by six full-time and nine adjunct (part-time) instructors who have great enthusiasm for teaching chemistry. Together they offer day and evening classes at the Santa Rosa and Petaluma campuses. The department maintains high educational standards and places primary emphasis on quality undergraduate instruction.

The department takes pride in well-maintained and equipped laboratories that include a network of over 40 computerized data acquisition stations in addition to the typical laboratory equipment. Modern instruments regularly used by students include a GC/MS, NMR, FTIR, Fast Sequential AA, and a set of UV-VIS spectrometers.

The department has two full-time laboratory technicians who ensure that reagents, supplies and equipment are available and in good working order for all experiments. High standards for environmental health and safety are diligently maintained.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required: Master's Degree in Chemistry; OR Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or Biochemistry AND Masters degree in Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Chemical Physics, Physics, Molecular Biology, or Geochemistry; OR possession of a fully satisfied (Life) California Community College Instructors Credential in Chemistry; OR the equivalent. Requires a sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Preferred Qualifications (any of the following additional qualifications are preferred):

  • Advanced degree in Chemistry.
  • The equivalent of at least one year of full-time teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to instruct students in modern instrumental methods.An interest in Organic Chemistry.

  • An interest in implementing new educational methods and technologies.

  3. A statement describing your demonstrated experience in understanding and being sensitive to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds and disabled community college students, faculty and staff.
  4. Current Resume.
  5. Copies of transcripts of all college level course work. Unofficial copies (both sides) are acceptable, but official transcripts must be submitted prior to hiring. If transcripts are from an institution outside of the United States, applicants must provide a formal evaluation of their foreign degree(s) at the time of application. COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

  • Starting Salary Range: $57,389 - $80,918 per year (2013/14 Faculty Salary Schedule). Teaching experience, other related professional experience, and academic degrees determine salary placement on a schedule that is competitive with other California Community Colleges.

  • Benefits: The District offers a competitive health and benefit package for employees and eligible dependents.Leave/Holiday time: Full-time faculty members earn one day of sick leave for each month worked.
