FINDING A CAREER PATH: Walter Linares
Walter Linares had never heard of Santa Rosa, let alone Santa Rosa Junior College, before he received a Doyle Scholarship.
Originally from San Francisco, Walter struggled in high school and never thought himself worthy of attending college. After receiving a Doyle Scholarship, and moving into SRJC dorms in 2002, Walter started to find his way. “Living in Kent Hall for a year was the best experience for me because it gave me a real college life where you live on campus and feel connected to the college. I made a ton of friends living in the dorms.”
At SRJC, Walter developed his writing and math skills and took a career exploration class which helped him decide on a public relations career. But it was Connie Gozzarino, SRJC counselor, who guided Walter through college skills classes and ultimately helped him apply to transfer to Sacramento State University. “Connie used her job to help someone else’s life. You could tell that she put heart into her job.” Walter was the first in his family to graduate from college.
Like most transfer students, Walter found SRJC’s classes more challenging than his four year university. After graduating with a bachelors in public relations, Walter pursued his masters in sports management at University of San Francisco, while working full time. An internship with the Sacramento Kings marketing department combined his two passions of public relations and sports and led to his current full time role as a Marketing & Sales Coordinator for the Sacramento Kings.
Despite the NBA lockout in 2011, and the potential for the Sacramento Kings to move to Seattle, Walter’s twin passions motivate him to succeed in a tough career field. “As a kid, I could always turn to sports to make me happy. It was the constant.” The strong writing skills he developed at SRJC have helped him in his chosen career path.
“At every level, I have always looked back at SRJC as my foundation and as an institution I am proud to have attended.”
