Children's Center Health Requirements

Employee Health Requirements

Recommendations

The SRJC Student Health Services (SHS) has a commitment to help student-staff of the Children's Center to meet their immunization and health evaluation requirements. Nurse Practitioners, in collaboration with other health care providers, have reviewed the literature pertaining to community health and the epidemiology of disease amongst children in California and strongly encourage the following as preparation to work with kids on our campus.

The following information will help you decide what you need to do before you start work in the Children's Center.

Employee Health Requirements

You have been given a Health Screening form which contains several requirements:

TB Skin Test

Proof of freedom from active Tuberculosis is required. If you are a currently registered student you may receive a Tuberculosis Skin Test (PPD) at Student Health Services. If the skin test is positive, a chest x-ray will be ordered to rule out active disease. THE TB SKIN TEST MUST BE COMPLETED BEFORE THE HEALTH SCREENING (PART II ON FORM) CAN BE DONE.  Tuberculosis clearance also is required for Child Development students to complete their practicum hours in a community based childcare center.

Hepatitis B

If you have not received the Hepatitis B vaccine series, and your job classification at the Children's Center has been categorized as increased risk for Hepatitis B, you should consider getting the Hepatitis B vaccine series. Your supervisor can assist you in that process and provide you with the Santa Rosa Junior College Hepatitis B Vaccination Authorization referral. The injection timing is critical to the effectiveness of the Hepatitis B vaccine; you are responsible for keeping track of the schedule. When planning, please remember that SHS can only offer the immunization when classes are in session. Hepatitis B vaccination is given within a six month period in three increments.

Health Screening

This is done by a nurse practitioner to determine if you are able to safely fulfill all aspects of the job physically and mentally. This can take 5-15 minutes. The best way to take care of this is to make an appointment with a nurse practitioner. Call SHS or stop in to make an appointment.

Recommendations

Although these four immunizations are not required we strongly recommend them to everyone working with children. Immunizations are a safe and easy way to protect oneself against very serious illnesses for adults, as well as the children you may come in contact with.
Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR), typically two dosages are needed. There are birth date specific requirements for this vaccine, please click on MMR for more information.
Tetanus/Diphtheria (Td) booster is due every 7-10 years for protection.
Varicella (Chicken Pox) vaccine is strongly recommended for adults without a history of having had the disease.  A blood test is available, and recommended to check for immunity before receiving the vaccine, which is 2 dosages given 4-8 weeks apart.
Hepatitis A series consisting of two doses.
